Made in Paris in 1945 (right under the noses of the occupying Nazi army!), Marcel Carnes Children of Paradise is a gorgeous love story set in the Parisian theater world of the early 19th century. ("Paradise" is basically slang for what we would now call "the peanut gallery" or the cheap seats, where the poorest people in Paris went to view live performances.) It's a long movie (3 hours) but worth every minute.
