Dan Chung liked and reviewed New York, New York via GetGlue.com13 hoursOne of Scorsese's most overlooked films, yet one of his fullest expressions of personality: the love of film history permeates every scene, the attraction to destructive talent, all done in a lush, big way. Liza Minnelli and De Niro are a spectacular pair. Also, had no idea that the theme song originated here, and was later made famous by Frank Sinatra; not the other way around. A fantastic work.

Dan Chung liked and reviewed Room 666 on en.wikipedia.org5 daysA gem if there ever was one. Directors placed in a room with a camera and asked to speak their thoughts on cinema. Highlights include Godard, Antonioni, Herzog, a brief Fassbinder, and Wenders (who put this together). Some try to answer the questions straight, but some are put off by the fabricated situation. Interesting reactions from all. A real treat.
Dan Chung liked and reviewed Thunder Bay on en.wikipedia.org5 daysThis non-western pairing of James Stewart and Anthony Mann finds the former as a man with a dream and a checkered past. There is a love interest, a wily sidekick, an equally adventurous risk-taker to round out the diverse, dynamic cast, along with a town full of spiteful, drunk fishermen afraid of progress. Not the best from Stewart/Mann, but good, solid output.
Dan Chung liked and reviewed Ballets Russes via GetGlue.com5 daysFluidly telling a story 70-80 years old, while also allowing the members to tell their side of it looking back today, Ballets Russes is an invaluable document of a time and place no more. Intriguing stories, incredible talent and the admirable perseverance of a group of people sharing their art with the world. Great.
Dan Chung liked and reviewed A Swedish Love Story on en.wikipedia.org1 weekRoy Andersson's first feature ranks among the greatest debuts in cinema. The simple tale of adolescent love is told with wonderfully subtle style. The two teenage leads are remarkably evocative and the softly glowing cinematography is top-notch. Very different from his later films, but it captures humanity with a similar authenticity and feeling. Truly great.
Dan Chung liked and reviewed What Dreams May Come on en.wikipedia.org1 weekReferencing Dante's Inferno and the usual dichotomous afterlife of heaven and hell, this is a well-written, excellently performed, visually magnificent film. Robin Williams, Annabella Sciorra and Cuba Gooding Jr. keep this fantasy grounded in emotion and human relationships. I would have preferred a different ending, but there is plenty here to chew on otherwise, even a Werner Herzog cameo.

Dan Chung reviewed The Lovely Bones via GetGlue.com1 weekVisually, there's an eyeful of pretty graphics and hyper-realistic blends of locations. The director throws everything in there for a stylistic jumble that doesn't serve much purpose other than ostentation. I hope this is the last father-role Wahlberg plays. The story is okay, but the script and everything else were just overdone. Made me laugh a few times (not good).

Dan Chung liked and reviewed The Man from Laramie on en.wikipedia.org1 weekThe fifth and final of Stewart and Mann's westerns together. Stewart is once again a man with a past informing his present, as he hunts down those responsible for his brother's death. After being bullied, his logic and moral fiber take over and he shows the town of Coronado they messed with the wrong man. Tangled in a family drama and a possible love interest, Stewart untangles with the best of them. This set of films rivals the Ford/Wayne duo's output.
