Great insight into the life of one of my favorite actors. Rich and diverse array of anecdotes and comments from close friends, as well as well-written/researched. Compelling, even if a bit tragic, it's an absorbing book told chronologically but without that guiding the narrative.

Ebert's thoughtful, insightful praise of Scorsese. It may seem a bit overblown at first, but upon watching the films, they speak for themselves. Wonderful reading. Marty is one of the greatest.
- Dan Chung on January 12, 2010 at 5:05pmDan Chung liked and commented on The Continual Condition: Poems on amazon.com
A slim, posthumous collection of newly discovered poems, there is little that is among his best here, but it nonetheless conveys Bukowski's enduring quality: being refreshing. Consistently honest and funny and real.

Coetzee is becoming one of my favorite writers, this maybe his 4th book I've read. His style is simple and powerful, the story a somber tale of time passing and the world changing around you. Absorbing stuff.

Coetzee's brilliant novel not only illustrates his style, but also breaks new structural ground. For me, this book is as close as it gets to cinema.

Picked this up at Strand for $6. An unbelievable compilation of his ever-changing, yet strangely consistent, perspectives. Spans 40 years with tons of insights and observations. Absorbing.

Coetzee is a great writer. His third-person narration/perspective of childhood is insightful, melancholic and profound. He gets at the core of things in a simplistic way: a difficult task.

Unbelievable. One of the strongest men of the 20th century. His account of the troubles faced and triumphs achieved. An inspiring call to action that remains even more relevant today.
- Dan Chung on September 16, 2009 at 8:42amDan Chung liked and commented on Heart of Darkness on getglue.com
Serving as the basis for Apocalypse Now (and Brando's incredible improvisations), this is an effective allegory for the search for truth in convoluted surroundings (i.e. the human condition).

I feel like everyone has their Kerouac phase: a romantic dream of wandering through life. In hindsight though, the only thing that remains appealing is the spontaneity.

Essential reading for anyone interested in creating anything.
- Dan on September 14, 2009 at 2:25pmDan liked and commented on Robert Bresson on getglue.com
A rare, but welcomed collection of all-things-Bresson. A needle in a haystack considering the lack of publications about him.
- Dan Chung on September 3, 2009 at 5:25pmDan Chung liked and commented on Youth: Scenes from Provincial Life II on en.wikipedia.org
As close to an autobiography for myself as I've read. Scarily close. Coetzee's a concise, direct writer that gets at the marrow. Brilliant.
- Dan Chung on August 31, 2009 at 11:06amDan Chung liked and commented on The Story of a Shipwrecked Sailor on amazon.com
Pivotal read during my adolescence. Great prose and style. Marquez displays his writing prowess, even in the non-fiction realm.

A formative influence on me growing up. Its theories and impact have held up well for me over the past decade or so. Not many books do so.

A great overview of words taken from various sources, directly quoting Einstein. The areas he changed in over time are most interesting.

Read it in one sitting because of the interesting parts but flat overall considering the subject: my favorite album by Dylan. Risky waters.
- Dan Chung on May 4, 2009 at 4:12pmDan Chung liked and commented on The Heart Is a Lonely Hunter on en.wikipedia.org
One of McCullers' better works. A novel so rich and well-written, it amazes me that she wrote this at 22. Didn't want to put it down.
- Dan Chung on April 22, 2009 at 2:32pmDan Chung liked and commented on Ham on Rye on amazon.com
Bukowski looks back on his life with an uncommon distance. Also, I'm sure he embellishes a bit, but that's half the fun. Great writer.

Of all the Murakami I've read, this one stands out. Almost like a book version of Antonioni's L'Avventura: atmospheric and expands time.

I remember not loving this at first, then found myself still thinking about it weeks later. Probably the best compliment I can give a book.

A deep, dark (albeit, slanted) view into the life and times of Chet Baker. Pretty bleak, to say the least.
