A giant among giants. Have seen all of his films and he never made a bad one. Most will likely change the way you see the world.
- Dan on February 9, 2010 at 5:38pmDan favorited and commented on Andrei Tarkovsky on imdb.com
Seen each film by him and love them all. A true master. Aesthetically brilliant with a philosophical foundation which puts him in the upper echelons of filmmaking.

Usually my answer for favorite film. Elegant, paced incredibly, with one of the saddest, most transcendent endings.
- Dan Chung on February 5, 2010 at 2:01pmDan Chung favorited and commented on Berlin Alexanderplatz on en.wikipedia.org
Truly monumental work. Not only held my interest for the 15 hours, but deepened and broadened my appreciation for it the more I watched. Incredibly moving. A towering achievement in cinema, or all art forms for that matter.
- Dan on February 5, 2010 at 2:14pmDan favorited and commented on Blonde on Blonde on pandora.com
The cover photo is out of focus. The music is anything but. Sad Eyed Lady of the Lowlands is the kind of song all musicians aspire to.

The Dylan album that speaks to me most. Emotionally raw and honest in a way most people usually avoid.
- Dan Chung on February 5, 2010 at 2:33pmDan Chung favorited and commented on Charles Bukowski on en.wikipedia.org
Went through nearly every book of his; he got me through some tough times, namely college. Still revisit from time to time and it's as fresh as always. He lived every word.
- Dan Chung on February 5, 2010 at 2:26pmDan Chung favorited and commented on Charlie Chaplin on en.wikipedia.org
One of the greatest to ever work in cinema. He did it all (writing, directing, editing, cinematography, score, etc) and then some. Sublime.
- Dan Chung on February 5, 2010 at 3:03pmDan Chung favorited and commented on Chet Baker on getglue.com
Few can touch his voice and trumpet balladry. A vast discography, but well worth diving into for the dedicated few.
- Dan on February 12, 2010 at 10:57amDan favorited and commented on Chet Baker in Tokyo on amazon.com
Chetty's later stuff is much more fulfilling for me. This is a gem of a performance.
- Dan Chung on February 5, 2010 at 2:23pmDan Chung favorited and commented on City Lights on en.wikipedia.org
One of the finest, funniest Chaplin efforts. From the outrageous boxing match to the tender ending, his last silent film was one of his greatest visually.

What a lifesaver. You can buy/sell/find/read/write/meet just about anything here. Particularly enjoy the Best-of section.
- Dan Chung on February 5, 2010 at 2:34pmDan Chung favorited and commented on Dream interpretation on en.wikipedia.org
This has potential to be an invaluable resource for self-discovery, but in terms of implementation, the devil is in the details. Intriguing stuff.
- Dan Chung on February 5, 2010 at 3:04pmDan Chung favorited and commented on Elliott Smith on amazon.com
His deceptively simple musicianship, oft-imitated style and controversial death make him easy to write off, but that'd be a pity.
- Dan Chung on February 5, 2010 at 2:34pmDan Chung favorited and commented on Film on en.wikipedia.org
This stuff keeps the blood pumping in my veins.
- Dan Chung on February 5, 2010 at 2:35pmDan Chung favorited and commented on Film Forum on en.wikipedia.org
One of my favorite places in the city. They play consistently excellent, widely unavailable films. Being able to walk there doesn't hurt.
- Dan Chung on February 5, 2010 at 2:35pmDan Chung favorited and commented on Frank Lloyd Wright on en.wikipedia.org
One of the towering figures in history, let alone architecture. The Ken Burns documentary is informative (albeit superficial). A hero.
- Dan Chung on February 17, 2010 at 2:13pmDan Chung favorited and commented on High and Low via Glue Suggestions
Kurosawa can do no wrong. He tackles a crime drama, ransom plot here, balancing a company takeover (money/power) and a kidnapping (family/love) with the touch of a master. Mifune is equally excellent; this is a can't-miss.
- Dan Chung on February 17, 2010 at 8:42amDan Chung favorited and commented on James Cagney on en.wikipedia.org
An actor known for his fast-talking, Napoleonic tough-guy gangster roles, he had several other performances that departed from this typecasting. Supposedly quite generous; and had a love for sailing, painting and farming. An icon.
- Dan Chung on February 5, 2010 at 3:03pmDan Chung favorited and commented on John Coltrane on getglue.com
Plays ballads with the best of them and his experimental work is out of this world. His stuff with Johnny Hartman is a good place to start.
- Dan Chung on February 3, 2010 at 2:33pmDan Chung favorited and commented on L'Eclisse via Glue Suggestions
The final part of Antonioni's loose alienation trilogy (with La Notte and L'Avventura). This is perhaps the best of the three visually. His knack for ending sequences is strongly evidenced with other films but maybe none as well-done as this.
- Dan Chung on February 5, 2010 at 2:23pmDan Chung favorited and commented on Limelight on en.wikipedia.org
One of the finest films I've seen. Heartbreaking and uplifting, possibly Chaplin's most autobiographical and in turn his most touching.
- Dan Chung on February 12, 2010 at 10:13amDan Chung favorited and commented on Make Way for Tomorrow on en.wikipedia.org
One of the saddest, most touching stories I've seen. Tender, heartbreaking and pure. An American gem, a classic. I could not rave more for this film.
Roger Ebert does a great job of summing it up: http://rogerebert.suntimes.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20100211/REVIEWS08/100219991 - Dan on February 9, 2010 at 5:31pmDan favorited and commented on Marcello Mastroianni on imdb.com
A master of expression and body language. He took Chaplin and Keaton and channeled them in serious films.
- Dan on February 9, 2010 at 5:36pmDan favorited and commented on Marlon Brando on imdb.com
One of my favorite actors. Especially love seeing interviews with him.
- Dan Chung on February 5, 2010 at 3:30pmDan Chung favorited and commented on Martin Luther King, Jr. on getglue.com
Remarkable legacy of honest opposition to the evils that pervade our lives. Aside from Gandhi, who else has proven that non-violence works in such a widespread, profound way?
- Dan on February 9, 2010 at 5:35pmDan favorited and commented on Martin Scorsese on imdb.com
My favorite American director, some of his latest films notwithstanding (though still technically sound, not as powerful). His impact on cinema rivals Godard. I can listen to him talk for hours (and have - if you count his documentary journeys through Italian/American cinema).
- Dan Chung on February 5, 2010 at 2:35pmDan Chung favorited and commented on Maslow's hierarchy of needs on en.wikipedia.org
It just makes a lot of sense. I especially like a psychology not based on disorders, but rather on ways to thrive as a human being.
- Dan Chung on February 9, 2010 at 5:31pmDan Chung favorited and commented on Michelangelo Antonioni on imdb.com
One of the best there is. Uses cinematic space and time like few others can.
- Dan Chung on February 5, 2010 at 3:03pmDan Chung favorited and commented on Miles Davis on pandora.com
Can't say much more that hasn't already been said about Miles. Just do yourself a favor and listen up.
- Dan Chung on February 9, 2010 at 5:31pmDan Chung favorited and commented on Montgomery Clift on en.wikipedia.org
"At one point he was receiving so many offers of roles that they literally filled up his home." He had subtle depth matched only by Brando.
- Dan Chung on February 18, 2010 at 11:08amDan Chung favorited and commented on Mouchette via Glue Suggestions
Deceptively simple story that expresses profound messages about the cruelty of man and consequences of apathy. One of Bresson's finest.
- Dan Chung on February 11, 2010 at 3:01pmDan Chung favorited and commented on Nagisa Oshima on en.wikipedia.org
His films have been slower to gain release, but of what is out there, each reflects his highly unique style. He blends eroticism, violence, daily life, and morality, all the while challenging the status quo and spurning socially acceptable politeness.
- Dan Chung on February 5, 2010 at 2:35pmDan Chung favorited and commented on New York Public Library on en.wikipedia.org
A main reason I love living in New York, the NYPL's such an incredible resource. I'm at my local branch at least once a week www.nypl.org
- Dan Chung on February 5, 2010 at 3:04pmDan Chung favorited and commented on Nina Simone on last.fm
She's got it all: the voice, the ideas, the soul. If you don't like her, I don't think we can be friends :)
- Dan Chung on February 3, 2010 at 2:51pmDan Chung favorited and commented on Paul Newman on Top Actors Movie Star List
Truly a great, in every sense of the word. At the top in terms of acting (many under-seen gems in his filmography) over such a long period of time, plus quite a philanthropist. I buy lots of Newman products (from pasta sauce to cookies).
- Dan on February 3, 2010 at 2:25pmDan favorited and commented on Pickpocket on imdb.com
A good entry point into Bresson's work. Like his other films, it gets richer on multiple viewings. Tell me you're not amazed by the ending.
- Dan on February 9, 2010 at 5:28pmDan favorited and commented on Pier Paolo Pasolini on imdb.com
Fiercely political and intensely creative. Prolific in many areas (his poetry and short stories are great as well). Filmmaker of the highest order.
- Dan Chung on February 8, 2010 at 4:45pmDan Chung favorited and commented on Pierre Bonnard on Glue stream
One of my favorite painters. His use of color, melancholic content and framing are extremely powerful. There's something about standing in front of his paintings, as opposed to seeing them in a book, that bears more impact than other painters (for some of which a book can suffice).
- Dan Chung on February 5, 2010 at 2:13pmDan Chung favorited and commented on Raging Bull on en.wikipedia.org
A revolutionary film that Scorsese referred to as "kamikaze" filmmaking. One of my favorites. A visceral, intensely powerful experience.
- Dan Chung on February 9, 2010 at 5:29pmDan Chung favorited and commented on Rainer Werner Fassbinder on en.wikipedia.org
The Van Gogh of directing (43 films by the age of 37). An incredible force of creativity that has rarely been matched in any medium.
- Dan on February 9, 2010 at 5:28pmDan favorited and commented on Robert Bresson on imdb.com
Possibly has done the most for cinema as an art form since Chaplin. His films are at the pinnacle of simplicity, difficult to get into for most since they lack typical "drama", but if receptive to them, they can be profound experiences.
- Dan Chung on February 5, 2010 at 2:33pmDan Chung favorited and commented on Solitude on en.wikipedia.org
A necessity for me. If you can feel alright (not bored or fidgety or distracted or lonely) by yourself, there's nothing like it.
- Dan Chung on February 3, 2010 at 2:28pmDan Chung favorited and commented on Stalker on Foreign Classics Movie List
Almost a second science fiction film (Solaris being his other) from Tarkovsky. Incredibly well-made. Metaphoric, philosophical and profound.
