Not as visually or stylistically innovative as Godard, but equally as important and a better storyteller. Interesting films throughout his entire career; diverse output including many that played with genre. Brilliant director.
- Dan Chung on March 12, 2010 at 3:07pmDan Chung liked and commented on James Stewart on getglue.com
Likable actor that worked with many of the great directors (Hitchcock, Lubitsch, Ford, Capra, Wilder). His filmography is overflowing with American classics. He put me off at first (his voice and demeanor mainly), but has since grown on me.
- Dan Chung on March 3, 2010 at 10:36amDan Chung liked and commented on Jeff Bridges on getglue.com
Earnest, natural actor with a large, varied body of work. Definitely recommend going through his filmography and watching some of his high points (Fearless, Tucker, The Big Lebowski, Fabulous Baker Boys, The Fisher King, and so on). He's one of the few actors that makes a movie better just by being in it.
- Dan Chung on March 1, 2010 at 9:52amDan Chung liked and commented on Rock Hudson on en.wikipedia.org
Quite a filmography (almost 70 features), his work with Douglas Sirk provides a majority of the high points but he's done plenty of other great stuff. Part of the movement away from the macho leading actor towards the sensitive one. Great actor.
- Dan Chung on March 1, 2010 at 9:46amDan Chung liked and commented on Dirk Bogarde on en.wikipedia.org
An unusual actor that had quite a range of ability and film choices. Usually playing a subdued, introspective kind of character with flourishes of anger, he is usually very intriguing to watch.
- Dan Chung on March 1, 2010 at 9:31amDan Chung liked and commented on Terry Gilliam on en.wikipedia.org
One of the most interesting working directors, each of his films is an imaginative vision, executed with skill and inventiveness. His characters troubles and strengths are often reflective of his own and though his productions are more often than not plagued by disaster, the finished products are well worth it. Can't wait to see what he comes up with next.
- Dan Chung on February 26, 2010 at 8:47amDan Chung liked and commented on Robert Altman on en.wikipedia.org
Robert Altman is a visionary. His films are uniquely made and his signature style of overlapping dialogues and a floating, meandering camera is immediately recognizable. Usually works with many storylines woven together like a tapestry of experience. Several great films.
- Dan Chung on February 17, 2010 at 8:42amDan Chung favorited and commented on James Cagney on en.wikipedia.org
An actor known for his fast-talking, Napoleonic tough-guy gangster roles, he had several other performances that departed from this typecasting. Supposedly quite generous; and had a love for sailing, painting and farming. An icon.
- Dan Chung on February 11, 2010 at 3:01pmDan Chung favorited and commented on Nagisa Oshima on en.wikipedia.org
His films have been slower to gain release, but of what is out there, each reflects his highly unique style. He blends eroticism, violence, daily life, and morality, all the while challenging the status quo and spurning socially acceptable politeness.
- Dan Chung on February 10, 2010 at 7:30amDan Chung liked and commented on Jean-Louis Trintignant on en.wikipedia.org
Excellent actor. He's done many diverse roles with several top-notch directors. Great filmography to dive into.
- Dan on February 9, 2010 at 5:38pmDan favorited and commented on Andrei Tarkovsky on imdb.com
Seen each film by him and love them all. A true master. Aesthetically brilliant with a philosophical foundation which puts him in the upper echelons of filmmaking.
- Dan on February 9, 2010 at 5:36pmDan favorited and commented on Marlon Brando on imdb.com
One of my favorite actors. Especially love seeing interviews with him.
- Dan on February 9, 2010 at 5:35pmDan favorited and commented on Martin Scorsese on imdb.com
My favorite American director, some of his latest films notwithstanding (though still technically sound, not as powerful). His impact on cinema rivals Godard. I can listen to him talk for hours (and have - if you count his documentary journeys through Italian/American cinema).
- Dan on February 9, 2010 at 5:33pmDan liked and commented on Buster Keaton on imdb.com
One of the most amazing things about Keaton is that he did his own stunts. The stone-faced wonder.
- Dan on February 9, 2010 at 5:31pmDan favorited and commented on Marcello Mastroianni on imdb.com
A master of expression and body language. He took Chaplin and Keaton and channeled them in serious films.
- Dan Chung on February 9, 2010 at 5:31pmDan Chung favorited and commented on Michelangelo Antonioni on imdb.com
One of the best there is. Uses cinematic space and time like few others can.
- Dan Chung on February 9, 2010 at 5:31pmDan Chung favorited and commented on Montgomery Clift on en.wikipedia.org
"At one point he was receiving so many offers of roles that they literally filled up his home." He had subtle depth matched only by Brando.
- Dan Chung on February 9, 2010 at 5:29pmDan Chung favorited and commented on Woody Allen on imdb.com
For me, him and Scorsese are the best American directors. Can't beat his comedies, but even his serious ones are formidable.
- Dan Chung on February 9, 2010 at 5:29pmDan Chung favorited and commented on Rainer Werner Fassbinder on en.wikipedia.org
The Van Gogh of directing (43 films by the age of 37). An incredible force of creativity that has rarely been matched in any medium.
- Dan on February 9, 2010 at 5:28pmDan favorited and commented on Pier Paolo Pasolini on imdb.com
Fiercely political and intensely creative. Prolific in many areas (his poetry and short stories are great as well). Filmmaker of the highest order.
- Dan on February 9, 2010 at 5:28pmDan favorited and commented on Robert Bresson on imdb.com
Possibly has done the most for cinema as an art form since Chaplin. His films are at the pinnacle of simplicity, difficult to get into for most since they lack typical "drama", but if receptive to them, they can be profound experiences.
- Dan on February 9, 2010 at 5:27pmDan favorited and commented on Akira Kurosawa on imdb.com
A giant among giants. Have seen all of his films and he never made a bad one. Most will likely change the way you see the world.
- Dan Chung on February 5, 2010 at 2:26pmDan Chung favorited and commented on Charlie Chaplin on en.wikipedia.org
One of the greatest to ever work in cinema. He did it all (writing, directing, editing, cinematography, score, etc) and then some. Sublime.
- Dan Chung on February 3, 2010 at 3:01pmDan Chung liked and commented on Penélope Cruz on Top Actresses Movie Star List
One of my favorites working today. Her stuff with Almodovar is likely best, but she's also done other good ones (particularly Vicky Cristina Barcelona and Open Your Eyes, which was remade into Vanilla Sky).
- Dan Chung on February 3, 2010 at 2:55pmDan Chung liked and commented on Mia Farrow on netflix.com
She has done a ton of great stuff, including and apart from the many Woody Allen films. Rosemary's Baby and John and Mary are two of my favorites.
- Dan Chung on February 3, 2010 at 2:51pmDan Chung favorited and commented on Paul Newman on Top Actors Movie Star List
Truly a great, in every sense of the word. At the top in terms of acting (many under-seen gems in his filmography) over such a long period of time, plus quite a philanthropist. I buy lots of Newman products (from pasta sauce to cookies).
- Dan Chung on February 3, 2010 at 2:49pmDan Chung liked and commented on Humphrey Bogart on getglue.com
One of the greatest to grace the screen. His personality got him roles his looks couldn't. Some personal favorite roles: In A Lonely Place, The African Queen, The Treasure of the Sierra Madre, They Drive By Night.
- Dan Chung on January 27, 2010 at 9:47amDan Chung liked and commented on Steven Soderbergh on getglue.com
The more films I see of his, the more I like him. He had an incredible run of directing in the 2000s. Lots of hidden gems in his filmography (Kafka, The Limey, Bubble), as well as the outstanding ones (Che, Schizopolis).
- Dan on January 26, 2010 at 9:47amDan liked and commented on Fritz Lang on imdb.com
Incredible director with 2 of the most impressive films: M and Metropolis. Also, his later film noir attempts were very strong, particularly Scarlet Street and The Big Heat.
- Dan Chung on December 28, 2009 at 10:50amDan Chung liked and commented on Juliette Binoche from Bill Bateman's movie stars
A wonderful actress that is magnetic in any role. She's done so many great films.
- Dan Chung on December 23, 2009 at 11:33amDan Chung liked and commented on Satyajit Ray on getglue.com
Have not seen nearly enough as I would like to, but mostly because of the unavailability of his works. Pather Panchali is one of my favorite films.
- Dan Chung on December 23, 2009 at 11:21amDan Chung liked and commented on Stanley Kubrick on en.wikipedia.org
One of the most brilliant directors.
- Dan Chung on December 21, 2009 at 9:03amDan Chung liked and commented on Nicholas Ray on getglue.com
Vibrant director that broke through Hollywood's cliches and mediocrity to create several works of art within a relatively short period of time. Working my way through his filmography.
- Dan Chung on December 14, 2009 at 9:57amDan Chung liked and commented on Werner Herzog on britannica.com
An extremely diverse body of work filled with excellent documentaries and fiction films. Though some films vary in quality, Herzog is always interesting.
- Dan Chung on November 19, 2009 at 9:31amDan Chung liked and commented on Harvey Keitel on fandango.com
Keitel plays the morally conflicted very well (tough guy with a big heart). Too many classic roles to name. Immediately enhances a character.
- Dan Chung on November 19, 2009 at 9:26amDan Chung liked and commented on Anton Walbrook on en.wikipedia.org
Walbrook was not in many films, but had intense performances in the ones he was (especially the Powell+Pressburger and Ophuls).
- Dan Chung on November 10, 2009 at 8:04amDan Chung liked and commented on Steve Buscemi on en.wikipedia.org
Lays claim to many unforgettable supporting roles, as well as some great leads. Always watchable.
- Dan Chung on November 5, 2009 at 11:05amDan Chung liked and commented on Forest Whitaker on en.wikipedia.org
Love this guy (especially when he gets mad). See him in The Last King of Scotland - maybe his best performance. He shows up in some pretty unexpected places, but it's always a nice surprise.
- Dan Chung on November 2, 2009 at 8:47amDan Chung liked and commented on Burt Lancaster on netflix.com
One of the finest actors. Pure charisma and dignity. He's been in so many great films.
- Dan Chung on October 28, 2009 at 8:59amDan Chung commented on Quentin Tarantino via Glue Suggestions
He's made some good (not great) films. Definitely a passionate filmmaker, just not really in line with my taste. He's loud.
- Dan Chung on October 28, 2009 at 8:52amDan Chung liked and commented on Gene Kelly on netflix.com
Phenomenal performer. Similar to Chaplin or Keaton in terms of body control.
- Dan Chung on October 27, 2009 at 8:19amDan Chung liked and commented on Vincent Price on getglue.com
With a voice like his, he could do anything. He chose horror, but also acted in some other genres. Great.
- Dan Chung on October 27, 2009 at 8:17amDan Chung liked and commented on Marilyn Monroe on getglue.com
Saw a poster of her in a bookstore the other day; she never took the same picture twice: always feels like you're seeing her for the first time. A real beauty, who could act with the best of them.
- Dan Chung on October 23, 2009 at 9:28amDan Chung liked and commented on David Cross on en.wikipedia.org
Really funny and bears an uncanny resemblance to Allen Ginsberg ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Allen_Ginsberg).
- Dan on October 23, 2009 at 8:44amDan liked and commented on Jean-Luc Godard on imdb.com
Love him or hate him, Godard is an essential part of the film history canon. His impact on cinema can never be overstated.
- Dan Chung on October 22, 2009 at 10:10amDan Chung commented on Arnold Schwarzenegger on en.wikipedia.org
The governor. It just doesn't get much better than an Arnold soundboard: http://www.crocopuffs.com/soundboard/arnold.html.
