About halfway through their discography with a desire for more. Diverse sound with songs for just about any mood you're in.
- Dan Chung on March 11, 2010 at 12:40pmDan Chung liked and commented on Belle & Sebastian on Indie Rock Recording Artist List
Infectious indie-pop with some thoughtful lyrics. Give them credit for being the source of endless imitation (even if the followers were not up to par), but aside from a couple gem albums, they leave me kind of flat.
- Dan Chung on March 10, 2010 at 4:59pmDan Chung liked and commented on Sparklehorse on en.wikipedia.org
Very sad the lead-singer killed himself. The first two albums are good, but my taste tends towards their latter two (It's A Wonderful Life and Dreamt For Light Years...). Fantastic stuff. Seemed like he was moving in a great direction.
- Dan Chung on February 8, 2010 at 2:51pmDan Chung liked and commented on Etta James on en.wikipedia.org
Only have the Chess compilation Her Best so far, but may dive deeper into her discography. Hard to resist her alternating delivery of emotional bursts and silky vocals.
- Dan Chung on February 5, 2010 at 3:07pmDan Chung favorited and commented on The Clash on amazon.com
Great stuff. They had it all: the lyrics, the catchy hooks, the social awareness, the dual vocalists, the dynamism, the pure vibrancy. One of my favorite bands.
- Dan Chung on February 5, 2010 at 3:04pmDan Chung favorited and commented on Nina Simone on last.fm
She's got it all: the voice, the ideas, the soul. If you don't like her, I don't think we can be friends :)
- Dan Chung on February 5, 2010 at 3:04pmDan Chung favorited and commented on Elliott Smith on amazon.com
His deceptively simple musicianship, oft-imitated style and controversial death make him easy to write off, but that'd be a pity.
- Dan Chung on February 5, 2010 at 3:03pmDan Chung favorited and commented on Miles Davis on pandora.com
Can't say much more that hasn't already been said about Miles. Just do yourself a favor and listen up.
- Dan Chung on February 5, 2010 at 3:03pmDan Chung favorited and commented on John Coltrane on getglue.com
Plays ballads with the best of them and his experimental work is out of this world. His stuff with Johnny Hartman is a good place to start.
- Dan Chung on February 5, 2010 at 3:03pmDan Chung favorited and commented on Chet Baker on getglue.com
Few can touch his voice and trumpet balladry. A vast discography, but well worth diving into for the dedicated few.
- Dan Chung on January 29, 2010 at 8:59amDan Chung liked and commented on Eric Clapton on getglue.com
Widely regarded among the best, I haven't heard much of his group work (besides Derek & the Dominoes), but his solo stuff is great.
- Dan Chung on January 29, 2010 at 8:55amDan Chung liked and commented on Thelonious Monk on getglue.com
Some of the most incredible piano playing in the world comes from this man. Eclectic, emphatic and inspired.
- Dan Chung on January 25, 2010 at 6:11pmDan Chung liked and commented on Ryan Adams on getglue.com
Based on Heartbreaker and the Suicide Handbook alone, he's among my favorite solo artists.
- Dan Chung on December 23, 2009 at 5:03pmDan Chung liked and commented on Bonnie "Prince" Billy on Indie Rock Recording Artist List
This guy is a gem. A wonderful, rich discography worth exploring and even some roles in films (Old Joy, Julien Donkey Boy). His album 'I See A Darkness' is among my favorites. AKA Will Oldham.
- Dan Chung on December 21, 2009 at 11:05amDan Chung liked and commented on Gerry Mulligan on Jazz Recording Artist List
Mulligan bounced around and played with nearly everyone. Had his hand in several pivotal jazz recordings.
- Dan Chung on December 21, 2009 at 11:02amDan Chung liked and commented on Louis Armstrong on getglue.com
Armstrong had the voice, the horn and the personality. His influence is difficult to overstate.
- Dan Chung on December 8, 2009 at 10:30amDan Chung liked and commented on Will Oldham on en.wikipedia.org

- Dan Chung on October 14, 2009 at 9:42amDan Chung liked and commented on Alec Ounsworth on en.wikipedia.org
His voice can polarize first-time listeners, but dive right in. Clap Your Hands Say Yeah, Flashy Python and now his solo work. He plays about a dozen instruments.
- Dan Chung on October 12, 2009 at 12:30pmDan Chung liked and commented on Sunny Day Real Estate on en.wikipedia.org
Not sure if I agree with their classification as emo. They're harder to pin down than that, which is why I like their sound.
- Dan Chung on October 8, 2009 at 10:42amDan Chung liked and commented on Charlie Parker on en.wikipedia.org
Getting into him now. Better late than never. Used to live right by his place in the East Village (Avenue B aka Charlie Parker Place).
- Dan on October 8, 2009 at 10:29amDan liked and commented on The White Stripes on getglue.com
Jack White plays a mean guitar. Saw him open for Dylan and he just oozes talent.
- Dan Chung on October 8, 2009 at 10:26amDan Chung liked and commented on Arcade Fire on getglue.com
Waited around a bit to check them out (indie blog hype spreads fast these days), but am glad I got around to it. Funeral is a great album.
- Dan Chung on September 29, 2009 at 12:01pmDan Chung liked and commented on The Shins on en.wikipedia.org
Sounds like a modern blast from the past (i.e. a paradox). Interesting nonetheless. Small discography ultimately rewards the investment.
- Dan Chung on September 24, 2009 at 9:15amDan Chung liked and commented on Antony and the Johnsons on en.wikipedia.org
Antony and the Johnsons is definitely not for everyone. He sounds a little like Nina Simone and his music is somber, slow and operatic.
- Dan Chung on September 23, 2009 at 3:53pmDan Chung liked and commented on Neva Dinova on pandora.com
One of my more enjoyable bands to listen to. I like the tone of their music.
- Dan Chung on September 16, 2009 at 3:07pmDan Chung liked and commented on Jack White on getglue.com
One of my favorite active musicians. He pops up in unexpected places (Coffee & Cigarettes, Shine A Light, etc.). Love his live performances.
- Dan Chung on September 14, 2009 at 5:55pmDan Chung liked and commented on The Chiffons on en.wikipedia.org
Similar to the Shirelles but with a flavor of their own. Definitely seem to have inspired the Beatles (melodies, harmonies, songwriting).
- Dan Chung on September 10, 2009 at 3:54pmDan Chung liked and commented on Talking Heads on en.wikipedia.org
David Byrne is one of the more inventive singers I have come across. Definitely see the influence in later bands. Off-kilter stuff. Good.
- Dan Chung on August 31, 2009 at 3:34pmDan Chung liked and commented on Antonio Carlos Jobim on en.wikipedia.org
Brilliant musician that virtually single-handedly created the genre of bossa nova. Has been an influence on countless other singers.
- Dan Chung on August 31, 2009 at 3:32pmDan Chung liked and commented on The Shirelles on en.wikipedia.org
Excellent female doowop group. Their originals "Boys" and "Baby, It's You" are better than the Beatles' covers, which is saying something.
- Dan Chung on August 31, 2009 at 3:30pmDan Chung liked and commented on Astrud Gilberto on en.wikipedia.org
As far as female bossa nova vocalists go, look no further. Endlessly imitated and sampled, never quite replicated. A true gem of a voice.
- Dan Chung on August 31, 2009 at 3:07pmDan Chung liked and commented on The Beach Boys on en.wikipedia.org
Despite some blatant plagiarism along the way and their surfer tunes, they have some great albums. Pet Sounds is a must-have.
- Dan Chung on August 31, 2009 at 2:16pmDan Chung liked and commented on The Cure on getglue.com
The quintessential break-up band. Can't listen to them for hours anymore, but hearing them come on via shuffle once in a while is nice.
- Dan Chung on August 31, 2009 at 10:51amDan Chung liked and commented on Nick Drake on en.wikipedia.org
Pretty good. I can see the reason for subsequent Elliott Smith comparisons, but only superficially. Quite different musicians and sound.
- Dan Chung on August 28, 2009 at 3:09pmDan Chung liked and commented on Blonde Redhead on pandora.com
Just getting started with these guys, but from what I've heard so far, I'm ready to work through the discography album by album.
- Dan Chung on August 28, 2009 at 3:03pmDan Chung liked and commented on Television on pandora.com
Short-lived (even with the erratic reunions) and not much output, but they are definitely quality over quantity. Marquee Moon is incredible.
- Dan Chung on August 28, 2009 at 2:59pmDan Chung liked and commented on Radiohead on pandora.com
Pretty much the reigning king of music nowadays. Even kept their street cred by releasing albums for free. I even like their obscure stuff.
- Dan Chung on August 28, 2009 at 2:54pmDan Chung liked and commented on Doug Martsch on pandora.com
Lead of Built to Spill, he's got some great solo show bootlegs and a studio album. Similar voice to Neil Young, but not quite as shrill.
- Dan Chung on July 22, 2009 at 11:39amDan Chung liked and commented on Little Richard on en.wikipedia.org
A pioneer during the musical transformation in 1950s US. There aren't many that reach his level of vitality and pure charisma.
- Dan Chung on April 27, 2009 at 2:11pmDan Chung liked and commented on Karen Dalton on en.wikipedia.org
It's usually ridiculous when people are compared to Billie Holiday, but Dalton has gotten the closest for me. Woefully only has 2 albums.
- Dan Chung on April 27, 2009 at 2:09pmDan Chung liked and commented on Big Star on en.wikipedia.org
Their influence is almost as understated as their music. They had a great string of records.
- Dan Chung on April 20, 2009 at 5:02pmDan Chung liked and commented on Johnny Cash on pandora.com
One of the greats. He was creating up until the end. A remarkable, resilient career with tons and tons of quality material.
- Dan Chung on April 20, 2009 at 4:58pmDan Chung liked and commented on Gordon Lightfoot on pandora.com
Just getting started listening to him. He seems poised to dethrone Neil Young as my favorite Canadian musician.
- Dan Chung on April 20, 2009 at 4:52pmDan Chung liked and commented on Jimi Hendrix on pandora.com
This man was a monster on the guitar. I am just getting into him, but foresee a long, arduous journey through his discography.
- Dan Chung on April 20, 2009 at 4:49pmDan Chung liked and commented on David Bowie on pandora.com
A multi-faceted artist, some attempts far better than others. His high points though are undervalued, I think. Don't miss his acting either.
