The Criterion Collection Masters of Cinema (though a region-free DVD player is needed) are a greater education in film theory than most classes I took. Wonderful stuff.

They make me laugh; it seems like their hearts are in the right place. I just question how seriously others take their attempts at social justice. They seem to be written off or ignored as pranksters, and so it's maybe not so effective in enacting change. I guess awareness is the first step.
- Dan Chung on February 11, 2010 at 6:26pmDan Chung liked and commented on Carson McCullers on en.wikipedia.org
I had my phase of reading all of her work. Some novels were very good (particularly The Ballad of the Sad Cafe and Member of the Wedding), but The Heart is a Lonely Hunter is hard to top. Will likely finish her oeuvre someday. Clean, pared down style.

The world you see out there can be boiled down to the world within. For me, the goal is to get the two as close as possible.
- Dan Chung on February 8, 2010 at 4:45pmDan Chung favorited and commented on Pierre Bonnard on Glue stream
One of my favorite painters. His use of color, melancholic content and framing are extremely powerful. There's something about standing in front of his paintings, as opposed to seeing them in a book, that bears more impact than other painters (for some of which a book can suffice).

An incredible human being. He seemed infinitely curious and not for this world. A couple interesting letters:

This game amazed me as a kid and perhaps serves as the reason why I sometimes see unrelated events as chain reactions.
- Dan Chung on February 6, 2010 at 8:14amDan Chung liked and commented on High Line on en.wikipedia.org
One of my favorite parks in the city; an inventive, resourceful use of an otherwise abandoned space. When empty of visitors, it's a sublimely quiet place to be. Looking forward to the completed stretch (up to 34th Street).
- Dan Chung on February 5, 2010 at 3:30pmDan Chung favorited and commented on Martin Luther King, Jr. on getglue.com
Remarkable legacy of honest opposition to the evils that pervade our lives. Aside from Gandhi, who else has proven that non-violence works in such a widespread, profound way?
- Dan Chung on February 5, 2010 at 2:35pmDan Chung favorited and commented on Frank Lloyd Wright on en.wikipedia.org
One of the towering figures in history, let alone architecture. The Ken Burns documentary is informative (albeit superficial). A hero.
- Dan Chung on February 5, 2010 at 2:35pmDan Chung favorited and commented on Film Forum on en.wikipedia.org
One of my favorite places in the city. They play consistently excellent, widely unavailable films. Being able to walk there doesn't hurt.
- Dan Chung on February 5, 2010 at 2:35pmDan Chung favorited and commented on Craigslist on en.wikipedia.org
What a lifesaver. You can buy/sell/find/read/write/meet just about anything here. Particularly enjoy the Best-of section.
- Dan Chung on February 5, 2010 at 2:35pmDan Chung favorited and commented on Maslow's hierarchy of needs on en.wikipedia.org
It just makes a lot of sense. I especially like a psychology not based on disorders, but rather on ways to thrive as a human being.
- Dan Chung on February 5, 2010 at 2:35pmDan Chung favorited and commented on New York Public Library on en.wikipedia.org
A main reason I love living in New York, the NYPL's such an incredible resource. I'm at my local branch at least once a week www.nypl.org
- Dan Chung on February 5, 2010 at 2:34pmDan Chung favorited and commented on The Criterion Collection on en.wikipedia.org
An incredible resource for film lovers. Of their roughly 500 titles, they rarely disappoint. Regardless of taste, there's something for all.
- Dan Chung on February 5, 2010 at 2:34pmDan Chung favorited and commented on Dream interpretation on en.wikipedia.org
This has potential to be an invaluable resource for self-discovery, but in terms of implementation, the devil is in the details. Intriguing stuff.
- Dan Chung on February 5, 2010 at 2:33pmDan Chung favorited and commented on Charles Bukowski on en.wikipedia.org
Went through nearly every book of his; he got me through some tough times, namely college. Still revisit from time to time and it's as fresh as always. He lived every word.
- Dan Chung on February 5, 2010 at 2:22pmDan Chung liked and commented on Philosophy on getglue.com
One of my majors in college (the other was Film). Like anything else, good in moderate doses. Very easy to overdo it theoretically. Felt I was always wondering the practicality of a lot of the readings. Aristotle or Plato (not surprisingly) answered from this angle more often than others, in my opinion.
- Dan Chung on January 26, 2010 at 9:01amDan Chung liked and commented on Homer Simpson on en.wikipedia.org
One of my very few heroes.
- Dan Chung on December 30, 2009 at 10:07amDan Chung liked and commented on Kingda Ka on en.wikipedia.org
Rode this a few years back (around the time of its opening) and it's probably the closest I've felt to death. Exhilarating. The pictures afterwards are the funniest because people look legitimately frightened.
- Dan Chung on December 30, 2009 at 10:01amDan Chung commented on New Year's resolution on en.wikipedia.org
Wonder what the world would be like if people made resolutions more than once a year. And then followed through on them.
- Dan Chung on December 28, 2009 at 9:55amDan Chung liked and commented on Tiger Woods on getglue.com
Just because celebrities entertain the public doesn't make their lives public domain as well. An incredible athlete and a game-changer for one of the least integrated sports.
- Dan Chung on December 28, 2009 at 9:02amDan Chung liked and commented on Digital piano on en.wikipedia.org
Got myself one of these and couldn't be happier. You spend a little more for the real piano feel and sound, but it's worth it.
- Dan Chung on December 23, 2009 at 11:20amDan Chung liked and commented on Krzysztof Kieślowski on getglue.com
Not nearly as lauded or known as his work demands. The Decalogue and Colors trilogy are masterful.
- Dan Chung on December 23, 2009 at 11:11amDan Chung liked and commented on Hikikomori on en.wikipedia.org
Interesting phenomenon, but seems to be simply a natural product of the surroundings (the need to diagnose everything, overpopulation, the necessity for some solitude, increasing social pressures) more than a disorder or issue.
- Dan Chung on December 22, 2009 at 8:55amDan Chung liked and commented on Trader Joe's on getglue.com
Hard to beat the quality and low prices. I guess that's why they're always packed to the brim, preventing me from going. I spend a half-hour shopping and an hour in the checkout line.
- Dan Chung on December 22, 2009 at 8:52amDan Chung liked and commented on Whole Foods Market on getglue.com
The high prices are a bit exaggerated by naysayers. This is the only place I shop and will be a factor in where I move when my lease is up. Quality over quantity.
- Dan Chung on December 16, 2009 at 8:24amDan Chung liked and commented on Google Maps on getglue.com
After everyone got over how creepy the satellite views were, it became immediately evident just how useful this is. If you live in a big city, the transit maps and directions are incredible.
- Dan Chung on December 14, 2009 at 6:30pmDan Chung commented on Windows Vista on en.wikipedia.org
I use this on my work computer and it's not necessarily bad, but it's not exactly good (read: intuitive) either.
- Dan Chung on December 14, 2009 at 6:20pmDan Chung liked and commented on Guacamole on en.wikipedia.org
Really love this stuff. My first-grade teacher taught us how to make this, but that nugget of information has long since been forgotten. Who's got a tried-and-true recipe?
- Dan Chung on December 13, 2009 at 5:53pmDan Chung liked and commented on Robert Frank on en.wikipedia.org
A good filmmaker (though sparse output), better photographer. Seeing his book The Americans on display at the Met in order was one of the best photography exhibits I've seen (admittedly not many).
- Dan Chung on December 13, 2009 at 5:33pmDan Chung liked and commented on Strand Bookstore on en.wikipedia.org
Invaluable resource for New Yorkers. Once you learn your way around, it beats Amazon in price (usually) and you don't have to wait for anything to be shipped.
- Dan Chung on December 7, 2009 at 12:13pmDan Chung commented on The Morgan Library & Museum on en.wikipedia.org
It's okay. The William Blake exhibit is really interesting, but the recent renovations look like an Apple store. Museums are generally stuffy, and this one is especially so.
- Dan Chung on December 4, 2009 at 10:42amDan Chung liked and commented on Immanuel Kant on getglue.com
Really dense reading, but when something clicks, it's incredible. His categorical imperative changed the way I think.
- Dan Chung on December 3, 2009 at 10:11amDan Chung liked and commented on Bill Gates on en.wikipedia.org
Whether or not you like Microsoft, it's hard to ignore his philanthropic efforts.
- Dan Chung on December 1, 2009 at 7:42amDan Chung commented on Technology on getglue.com
This should be a tool to enhance our lives and the world around us, but at times it seems to be the end in itself.
- Dan Chung on December 1, 2009 at 7:41amDan Chung liked and commented on Human condition on en.wikipedia.org
Learning to embrace struggling makes things a whole lot easier.
- Dan Chung on November 18, 2009 at 11:15amDan Chung liked and commented on Dream dictionary on en.wikipedia.org
A good start to basic dream interpretation, but as with a regular dictionary, context is very important.
- Dan Chung on November 9, 2009 at 7:49pmDan Chung liked and commented on Mac OS X v10.5 on en.wikipedia.org
The last update for my poor PowerPC processor. Guess I'll have to switch to Intel when the time comes. Until then, I'm riding this into the sunset. Cleaner look+feel than Tiger.
