Never before has a quirky, scrawny, odd-looking bloke managed to be so sexy. Brainy sexy. And he can dance. Dig.

Quite funny, if a bit juvenile at times. I quite enjoyed his prank on CNN last year.

Beautiful and devastatingly sad. Faithful to the original novel, and superbly acted. This is a hard movie to sit through - and well worth it.

Enjoyed this film, the characters have depth and the story line is interesting.

He's got some kind of serious charm that's hard to put your finger on, and an intense under-the-surface energy that's just fun to watch.

Based on the so-so casting and the lukewarm reviews, I wasn't sure what to think of this film... so I was pleasantly surprised! It could easily fall into a standard rom-com formula, but stays just interesting and different enough to keep your attention. The characters are slightly different from the norm and endearing, so you find yourself caring about who they are and how (or if) they will get together, despite some pretty big emotional walls. I liked the artistic filming techniques and actually wish they'd done more of that, to give the film even more edginess. I rather enjoyed Jesse Bradford's character; unfortunately, Cuthbert could barely act her way out of a paper bag. I wouldn't call it outstanding filmmaking, but it's endearing and cute for a romantic watch.
Based on other Netflix reviews, it sounds like I need to watch the Korean original on which this one was based; once I can get my hands on a copy of that one, I'll post an update with comparison between the two films. - Jenna Marie X on March 1, 2010 at 8:06pmJenna Marie X liked and commented on The Beautiful Truth via Glue Suggestions
Fantastic documentary about the "health care" industry in America. Its most important contributions are to wake people up to: who really runs the FDA, who really pays for the "scientific studies" that say our drugs and food additives are "safe", why we are being medicated through our water, etc. Whether or not you believe the Gerson nutritional method works to cure illnesses, these pieces of information are worth the cost of admission alone. I also found the format cute and entertaining.
For 8 years I had an "incurable" disease that left me completely invalid and a shut-in, so I know what it's like to try to find a cure for serious illness through Western medicine - that is, nearly impossible. They aren't in the business of wellness; they're in the business of illness and selling pills, whose side effects are worse than any help they may provide. This film is highly recommended for anyone who isn't too closed minded to hear something new and consider its possible truths. - Jenna Marie X on February 28, 2010 at 7:15pmJenna Marie X liked and commented on Battle Studies from aniknafs's music
Although it's perhaps not as immediately appealing as the powerhouse that was Continuum, Battle Studies is a great album and a continuation of Mayer's developing persona as a musician. The songs are highly autobiographical, chronicling what was clearly a painful year for Mayer, as song after song is about the pain of failed relationships, breakups, and being lonely. The music and lyrics sound soft and straightforward, but there's a lot of depth and complexity to them that comes out with repeated listening - meaning this is the kind of album that grows on you. It's a fusion of his early pop sound with his later jazz influence and a whole new quality mixed in; something of a retro 1980's feel, influenced by the sounds of Tom Petty and Fleetwood Mac. Three things you can always count on Mayer for: (1) multi-layered meanings, (2) redefining his style with each new release, and (3) just all-out great song writing. Doesn't disappoint, even though nearly every song makes me want to cry.

Very sweet romantic comedy. Not exactly overly memorable, but pleasant. Garner does a very nice job.

This is one of my top 3 all-time favorite novels. I think it's Bach's best - beautifully written, hauntingly thought-provoking and at the same time gentle and inspiring. Fantastic. Love.

Oh this is SUCH a good movie! All about what it takes for a boy to become a "real man". Very male-bonding-ish, but in a way women will love to watch, too. Very, very touching and unique and smart. Impeccable performances by outstanding actors.

Really unusual and quirky love story, and actually a pretty intensive look into individuals living with, and learning to work through, abusive pasts. This is classified as a romantic comedy, but it is actually quite dark, and deals with very adult themes (sex, masturbation, and pornography are frequent topics of discussion - although very little is actually shown visually). It's definitely not for everyone, but a very different, real, and deeply moving story of how unconditional love and acceptance can overcome virtually anything. If you like stories that are unusual and make you think, or if you or someone close to you has suffered from serious childhood trauma such as rape, incest, or emotional abuse, you will find much to really like in this film. I found it fascinating and very, very touching.
Palka wrote, directed, and stars in the film with an absolutely stunning performance. Ritter, her real-life boyfriend, produced and co-stars. Great supporting cast, too. - Jenna Marie X on February 21, 2010 at 4:35pmJenna Marie X liked and commented on Miso soup from David Egger's recent things
Ooooh excellent stuff, if done properly. I prefer red miso over yellow or brown. Thoughts?

Pretty much physical perfection, and very talented, too, though her film career was short.
