I really love this movie. I believe it was the first Studio Ghibli / Miyazaki film dubbed in English and released in America, and then only to select artsy theaters. (Disney has since gone back and picked up previous releases.) It's a very unusual story with fascinating, multi-layered characters that you don't often see in Western films of any kind, much less animated films. As always with Miyazaki, the artwork is breathtaking - he creates magical lands like no one else around - and the soundtrack is gorgeous. Miyazaki is SO involved with his films, he personally drew something like 40,000 cels and also wrote some of the music himself. He initially intended this to be his final work before retiring, so he really poured himself into it, and it shows.

Be forewarned: although animated, this is a somewhat mature story for older kids; there are a few scenes of surprising violence that may not be appropriate for especially small people.

Such an amazing concept, great organization. And it works! Empowerment and education are the two gifts that keep on giving.

There is some helpful information here for general make-up tips, but mostly this is a visual feast and fun to look at for anyone interested in cosmetics and the beauty industry. I'm so sad that Kevyn Aucoin died at such an early age; he would undoubtedly have continued to push the envelope. All 3 of his books are visual masterpieces.

LOVE. So beautiful, one of Miyazaki's most breathtaking (in my opinion, he truly gets better with each film). Love the main character and her journey of growth. Love all the wild creatures she meets along the way. Love the extremely original plot line and how Ghibli always succeeds in transporting you to a completely different world and seeing things from such a unique perspective. Also love that he writes stories about interesting and empowered girls as much as boys. I could watch this a thousand times.

Based on the so-so casting and the lukewarm reviews, I wasn't sure what to think of this film... so I was pleasantly surprised! It could easily fall into a standard rom-com formula, but stays just interesting and different enough to keep your attention. The characters are slightly different from the norm and endearing, so you find yourself caring about who they are and how (or if) they will get together, despite some pretty big emotional walls. I liked the artistic filming techniques and actually wish they'd done more of that, to give the film even more edginess. I rather enjoyed Jesse Bradford's character; unfortunately, Cuthbert could barely act her way out of a paper bag. I wouldn't call it outstanding filmmaking, but it's endearing and cute for a romantic watch.

Based on other Netflix reviews, it sounds like I need to watch the Korean original on which this one was based; once I can get my hands on a copy of that one, I'll post an update with comparison between the two films.

Fantastic film, and perhaps the ultimate treatise on a young Generation X. Very funny, and features several of my favorite actors (love Janeane Garofalo). Ben Stiller wrote, directed, and acted, and I think this film is soooo much better than some of his later stuff (Zoolander, Night at the Museum) because while it's got a lot of humor, it also has a lot of heart. Love.

I thought it was hilarious that a Christian pop band, Sixpence None the Richer, remade one of their songs only 5 years after its original release - added nothing unique to the remake, and you gotta wonder if they even realized what they were singing about...
