Probably my favorite writer. His stories feature wonderfully crazy/real/human characters grounded in recognizable history. It helps if you know some of the history, but it's not essential.
Start with Midnight's Children or The Moor's Last Sigh if you're interested in Indian history. The Ground Beneath Her Feet is a fun, sprawling rock 'n' roll saga that's very accessible to westerners.
Haroun & the Sea of Stories is a great fable about intolerance and imagination to share with your kids. - Rich Rennicks on February 23, 2010 at 10:11pmRich Rennicks liked Margaret Atwood on getglue.com

Once owned a copy of Venus on the Half-Shell. Gave it to another Vonnegut fan before I realized how hard to find it is. Such is life.

I grew up on this stuff. Much darker and less heroic than DC Comics fare, but it actually ages decently enough.

One of the most-imaginative writers ever. His novels swallow you up for weeks and occupy your mind for months/years thereafter.

Not really sure the point of being a fan of a concept. Might the singularity happen? Maybe? Is it an interesting thing to think about? Yep? Has it spawned a hell of a lot of great science fiction? You bet! Will I print up T-shirts and attend singularity fan meetups at local bars? Yea, right!
