Orochimaru is a sad character, not many people would look at him this way. A sad character because he lost loved ones in endless shinobi wars when he was a kid, losing dear ones crippled his soul. As if his soul died that day, standing with Sandaime near the tombstone of his parents. These painful experiences drove him to search for formula to prolong live. this ambition made him do the unmentionable, including killing young ones so he could make use of their bodies. in a way he was quite successful he found the formula, tho the method was evil. His failure is probably that time runs faster than him lol, using chakra in battles took away what nature had left in his decaying body, he needed supplies of young bodies for the formula to work. The ultimate once and for all chance to stay young forever is to find a strong body with special ability, the sharigan, which is Sasuke. This craving for Sasuke killed Orochimaru, he was after all a stepping stone for Sasuke to get stronger.

there is an art of dying for Christians i just found out, Ars Moriendi is the manual for it, on how to die well. A 15th century friar set up this manual and it is really touching. However, like everything else that we inherit from the past (from middle age to 21st century is a long way), ars moriendi need to be rethinking in the 21st century context.
