Born and raised in the Kensington area of Philadelphia, I came from an environment of poverty and violence. My parents instilled in me a dedication to my education and that the best things in life you have to work hard for. After high school, I ran into a number of difficulties in my life that included losing my home (three times), caring for my parents in financial hardship, caring for my mother after she developed health problems, losing funding for my education (twice), and the death of my father. Today, I am a student in a challenging field with a high drop-off rate that forces classes to be dropped and in turn extends my stay at college. I struggle to stay on course and do so purely due to my friends.
