"Certain things they should stay the way they are. You ought to be able to stick them in one of those big glass cases & just leave them alone. I know that's impossible, but it's too bad anyway."

A fantastic rant from an unbalanced adolescent. I've read it countless times as you learn something different about Holder Caufield's personality every time.

Rereading it after a long time. For me it's more true now than it was the first time - maybe it's because I'm a teacher now and I'm seeing lots of potential Holden Caulfields around in school.

This is my favorite book of all time. Holden Caulfield touches me in a way that not many characters have been able to.

It's funny but sometimes I feel like Holden Caulfield--the depressed protagonist of "The Catcher in the Rye"--was the precursor to the self-deprecating, introspective hipster. You know that guy, he's your uber-creative pal who channels his self-loathing into sad songs and doomsday lyrics that are remarkable and totally get the girls? Of course, even though he's a songwriting genius, the kid's still miserable. Salinger's epic novel dives deep into this type of alienation that affects so many creative young people who have a hard time fitting into normal society. This novel has changed my life, and the lives of many of my malcontent hipster counterparts.

Is it a cliche to have this book in a Top 10? Maybe. But who cares! Holden is everyone's extension of what they wish they could do, instead of being more reserved.

I just found my Theatre teacher from St. Tims,. he was my Humanities teacher sophomore year when I read all of these traditiona HIgh School Literature Books, We went from the Orestia through to Catcher in the Rye and a Separate Peace in one year....along with Shakespeare and modern plays. I can't believe how long ago that was.

teen angst, defined and examined; no solution is given, but it's probably more fitting that way, as it allows the reader to make his or her own conclusions

Although it's a cliché, The Catcher in the Rye is my favorite book. J.D. Salinger's classic American story about a trouble teen Holden Caulfield is a must read for everyone and anyone I can think of. The Catcher in the Rye is at the top of most teachers' must reads lists, and a majority of people will have read it by the time they are in high school. But even though it is such a stream line, piece of American literature does not make it any less poignant or significant. In fact its popularity is a testament to the lasting effect of exquisite literature and authorship ability. Although the character of Holden is sometimes a little too much to handle, his teen angst is quite relatable to a certain extent. Not an incredibly difficult read, I would rate it at about a 9th or 10th grade reading level. While some of the themes may be a little advanced for a 14 year old, it is definitely a book that you can read later in life, and take away a new meaning and different interpretation.

You should read it on your teens or 20s and your own doubts will resonate. I read it later, and just plain loved it's simplicity.
