Finished. Why is it that sic fi tv, like dr. Who and star trek, speak of the transcendence of man and it's positive and hopeful, yet all the sic fi books I've been reading lately also deal with the transcendence of man and the are uniformly depressing, distressing and discouraging?

chaos82 Did you find this book depressing etc.? While I find Childhood's End to be have parts that are darker than anything else found in Clarke's writings, I did not find the ending to depressing. Unexpected, yes. Discouraging, no. While the metamorphosis was not without pain, in the end, humans, at least those that have "evolved" transend corporeal existence into a greater "Overmind".

Vivienne D'Avalon I guess it was depressing for me because in my hopes for the singularity and transhumanism, we keep what's best of humanity and don't turn into animalistic creatures -- the power to move the heavens, yes; but preferably not destroying earth in the process! I also just read "diaspora" recently, and that's much more how I envision the future of humanity, though that had it's sadness, to. And "rainbow's end," by Vernor Vi

Having finished the first three chapters, I now know where the opening episode of "V" came from. I wonder how much of this book was stolen for that series?
