              One of -- if not THE -- best personal memoirs of a solider. I first read this when I was 12 or 13 (after a nicked it from my older brother's room). It was terrifying, thrilling, nail-biting, and ultimately heartbreaking. My, God -- what we owe our war veterans. We can never, ever pay. Manchester's command of language-- the rhythms of his writing...such a pleasure to read.
