The Longfellow translation is the premium English translation. JC Fields and others assisted: The Dante Club at Harvard. They translated the Divine Comedy despite the best efforts of the university to stop the work from completing, as they believed it to be catholic propaganda.

I recommend this book, if you know Italian read it in that language. If not, find a good translation of it.
