Started reading this one again after a few years on the shelf. So far so good. Now, if I can only make time to finish it.

Reading the last chapters again for the last essay on it. You can really learn a ton from Shaara's writing style...

Cunning how Shaara defly mixes fact with fiction. Like Chamberlain after the Little Round Top: He wasn't sent to the middle of the Federal line. In fact, he was sent to occupy Big Round Top to the south. Yet Shaara places all the action on the Little Round Top that actually occurred on Big Round Top in reality. Fascinating to compare history and fiction!

I'm so inspired to write my novel on US Grant and Robert E Lee, reading this book. I want to finish it before the Sesquicentennial ends. Wish me luck!

Would rather see the movie based on the book (Gettysburg) first, but Gods & Generals book wasn't available. I've already seen that movie, so I will read this book & try not to nitpick the movie. :)

Lee's chapter on the First Day of Battle suddenly comes alive, reading it in conjunction with history books like Bruce Catton's Gettysburg: The Final Fury. I can see everything happening how -- and how Shaara's descriptions and timing differ ever slightly from historical accounts, which themselves may not know exactly when things occurred. Fascinating really be in the moment, without much knowledge of the whole scope of the battle. Now I can see the beauty of this narrative -- and how to write one when I do.

The best part of the book may be the final 50 pages. Pickett's Charge!

inhonoredglory @velvetjhall And the 3rd probably won't be made, unfortunately. Jeff Daniels is about 20 years older than when he played Chamberlain in "Gettysburg" and the less-than-outstanding sales figures of "Gods and Generals" all conspire for an end to the series. But there is a miniseries "To Appomattox" that I believe is set for a 2013 release. Also cast is Damien Lewis from "Band of Brothers."

Velvet Awesome! I look forward to that miniseries. I live about an hour or so from Appomattox. I've never been there & lived in Lynchburg for 5 yrs...just miles down the road from Appomattox! I've definitely taken the rich history of my area for granite. I never visited Thomas Jefferson's 2nd home, Popular Forest, & passed by the road leading to it every weekend for years!

inhonoredglory Gosh, what a tremendous spot of history you're in. I'm in California, and I doubt too much Civil War-related history occurred here. But I'm hoping to get to Mississippi sometime this year and visit the Grant Presidential Library and maybe some CW battle sites. History nerd in the making!

Just looked at the novel we have to read and write a book report on for history. It's about the battle of Gettysburg. I'm actually looking forward to reading this one!
