Good. It does a nice job of continuing the story without relying on too many new devices.

Awesome awesome twist at the end! While it was a bit slow, I still couldn't put it down.

Truly awful. The first book in the series is dark with heavy gothic elements, and the 'twist' (magical humans can consume traces of different types of metals to use special powers) is original although a tad dungeons & dragons. The second book is breathtakingly poorly written, with nothing at all happening for the first 300 pages and a rather dismal climax in which the author, clearly bored with his original characters suddenly decides to elevate one of the key players to a different level. Most of the book is spent convincing us of the two main characters' love for each other, with endless romantic dialogue and encounters and far too little consideration that they're supposed to be in a life or death situation. The dialogue that makes the characters Talmud like Californian teenagers. Really bad.
