So what does cricket have to do with immigration and 9/11? To O'Neill: everything! Cricket, according to the Trinidad-born Chuck, one of the central characters in the novel, is a lesson in civility! To understand cricket is to understand immigrants of muslim countries; in short, it is to understand and express the inexpressible attacks of September 11. This is not another domesticated novel about 9/11: the trauma and the sadness are not at its core. This is a work which tries to show the true nature of the American society, dominated by a heterogeneous community where different cultures, religions and ethnicity can collude and mingle.
