Melissa Intiso Lennie did what she did as response to losing her sister. When she was with Toby she felt as if she had to comfort him and being with comforted her. Grief can make a person do crazy things. I flunked out of college (let back in and graduated) when my grandfather died. She eventually comes to her sense..and the book wouldn't be the same without Joe tracing the footsteps of the words she left behind and learning understand her grief-induced mistakes. Such a beautiful book. ;)
