After breaking free from the Lifetime influence worn on their sleeves, Saves the Day created a scene classic with Stay What You Are. Melodic hardcore is replaced by emo pop goodness that pours forth from first track to last. Chris Conley's voice is in full, effeminate force here, and the band's rhythm is so tight it leaves no room for filler tracks. Granted, not everyone is keen on hearing a love sick young man sing about his awkward silences, but when you're heartbroken yourself, your heart bleeds with his.

Aaron Goodwin And above and beyond the heartbreak, other serious emotions are being dealt with in a well-suited macabre manner often repeated by other bands, but never pulled off even a fraction as well.

Adrian Villagomez Yeah, I was surprised when I found out that kid with the sweet voice was singing about such twisted stuff: "I should have had my hammer and a few rusty spikes / To nail you on a wall / And use bottles to catch your blood / Display you for the neighbors, so they know your time had come."

Aaron Goodwin It was definitely a shock. I think one of the tragedies of Chris' songwriting is that he lost the ability to write those kinds of things without it becoming trite. The latest records, though much darker, seem to be lacking in their writing.
