Imagine a world where time flows like a stream of check-ins from your friends. When they do something like read a book, watch a show, or listen to a song they check-in, which causes the stream that is time to flow.
In this world the more friends you have the faster time flows. For someone with many many very active friends, time flows very quickly. Just yesterday they were in third grade, now suddenly they have a son in third grade. For someone with few, inactive friends, time flows very slowly. They watch the clock and wait for it to be time for lunch. Time to go home.
Time that moves too quickly can make life go by like trees passing as you speed down the tracks in a train to Bern. Some people purposefully break connections with their friends or seek out less active friends to slow down time.
Time that moves too slowly can be equally painful. These people want to seek out new friends, but they are waiting for the time.
