If any other band tried crafting a musical love letter to Anne Frank, they would rightfully be accused of tasteless irony. But Neutral Milk Hotel makes it heartbreaking. Could anyone else turn lyrics like "I wished I could save her / In some sort of time machine" into a little moment of tragedy? This group captured something timeless yet ephemeral in this record. Definitely one of my favorites.
