Drew Brisby Star Wars: Episode IV A New Hope is the original Star Wars movie but is the fourth one in the story as a whole. Therefore it was made before the terrible movies known as the Phantom Menace, Attack of the Clones and Revenge of the Sith. In other words the first three, at least the way they are numbered, are prequels to the original 3 movies made in the 70's and 80's. I hope that helps.
