Not as half as good as Roeg's 'Walkabout' or Noyce's 'Rabbit -Proof fence imho. However it is still worth watching thanks to Nick Cave's fine screenplay and John Hillcoate's assured direction.

Lilymac Hey Zonal, lovin' your knowledge of these great Aussie fringe dwellers. Haven't seen Walkabout for years but now that you have reminded me, I'll view it again soon. Rabbit Proof Fence is one of the most searing and honest indictments of the colonial treatment of Australia's Aborginies that has ever been written or adapted for screen. There just isn't enough films like this. The sad part is there are still similar injustices today. As for The Proposition: Danny Huston's performance as The Dog Man psychopath Arthur is chilling and the score, written by Cave with Warren Ellis helps set the jangling atmosphere.

ZonalGman Now I know you're an Australian from you're Nick Cave quote, so can you recommend any more Aussie movies to me? Is Lantana any good?

Lilymac Don't get me started on Aus cinema. Lantana is worth a look, if you like that intense, intertwining relationship drama. Very well acted. Do not miss Samson and Delilah and Ten Canoes - great indigenous cinema. Other worthys are Last Ride; The Black Balloon; Look Both Ways; Romulus, My Father; Japanese Story; Two Hands (has been described as The Godfather in Thongs - flip flops, not the knicker kind, fuuuuunnny) The Interview, Proof (not the G Paltrow US prod). These are all AFI award winners. Australia does mostly drama with a smattering of comedy. But wait, there's more: The Chant of Jimmy Blacksmith, Chopper, The Castle, Romper Stomper, The Boys. Stop! The Australian take on life and humour can be mystifying to some so be warned and enjoy.

ZonalGman Thanx a bunch Lilymac. I've seen Chopper a couple of times(excellent & funny) but the rest will be new to me. I'm not up to speed on Aussie cinema. Last films I saw were Wolf Creek & Proposition. I've read about the indigenous two you mention cos I'm fascinated by what I've seen & heard about aboriginal culture. I'll start with whatever I can lay my hands on but might bypass Romper Stomper. Don't think I could make it through the soundtrack!!
Appreciate your tips. Thanx again :)

Lilymac If you liked Chopper, you'll like Two Hands. NB The Chant of Jimmy Blacksmith has an indigenous storyline. Yep, the didge culture here is amazing, complex and disgracefully disrespected. Makes me ashamed to be Australian. There is soooooo much we could learn from their attitudes to their land and each other. Oh, Wolf Creek, we call it the Texas Chainsaw Massacre with Strine.

ZonalGman Oops, got my mullets wrong there. Stuffed= tired, right. Whereas stunned mullet is definitely entering my vocab. I see that look on peoples faces all the time after I've been talking to them for a while. :)
