another bard alumni that i've had an almost life-long love affair with. his books have remained close to my heart and on the top of all my favorite lists for many years, and they always will. this guy is one of the few "famous" people that i'm actually desperate to meet.

Atari is a great player, and according to the rest of my family (who've all met him, though i have yet to) he's also a super nice guy! (his wife Jill is my cousin :)

read this in grad school and it tore my heart out. painful, really. such a powerful reading experience that i haven't needed to read it again, even though it's been almost 7 years, because it's still so vivid. i also think it'll take a good long while before i can work myself up to reading it another time. you must read this book.

explained this concept to my english students as we watched the movie "Coraline." it fits nicely. Campbell was a smart guy :)

what a complete wacko this dude was. i wouldn't even know who he was if it weren't for Bauhaus. so my mom was wrong...all that shoe-gazing i did when i was a little proto-goth girl at 13 really wasn't a waste of time. rather educational, really. (for the record, i think it was too long ago to call it "shoe gazing" when i did it. you little baby bats have it easy, what with your hot topics and such. in my day, we had to walk 5 miles to the goodwill, up hill, BOTH ways, in the snow, to get the raw materials to make our outfits....)

my "favorite" SD album (if someone who loves them as much as i do can actually have a favorite), and an absolute must listen if you're a guitar nerd. bernard purdie's drumming is beyond perfect, as is his ability to be egotistical about it. but then, if i could play like that i wouldn't bother being humble either. i would give my right arm to find a print of the artwork used for the cover, but leave it to Becker and Fagen to use a totally obscure artist. i guess for now i'll have to settle for hanging the LP album cover on my wall. my father graciously gave me all his Steely Dan vinyl when he discovered that his child had not only inherited his love of this band, but that-in essence- he created a monster by playing "any major dude" too many times when my mother was in labor. i can think of worse things to play at a time like that (although i'm not sure my mother would agree with that statement. she does hate michael mcdonald, after all. how that's possible is another story.)

If you care or are interested at all in how recording engineering works, this album is a great one to study and read about. one of the first albums of popular music to be recorded in a fully digital format (the very first being Ry Cooder's "Bop Til You Drop"), it is usually considered by people in the know to be a masterpiece of sound engineering.
