I love being aurally challenged by Schoenberg compositions. I wish his works were performed more often so I could experience the music live as opposed to simply listening to recordings.

The story of Hattie Caraway's election to the senate from Arkansas, following being appointed to her late-husbands seat, is a great story and adds a unique page to the colorful history of Huey Long.

The Spanish Civil War is an often overlooked period in the 20th century. The world was too busy focusing on Hitler's rearmament and seeds of aggression and recovering from the Great Depression. Orwell, as a British national fighting for what he believes is a righteous cause, sheds great insight to what people were actually fighting for, how dangerous the govt can become with the right circumstances, and how crucial the media and reliable information can be at all times. A great work full of history, but more importantly an examination of people fighting for what they believe in while what they believe in may or may not be reality (tea party movement?).

RFK's assassination was the most significant of the 1960s. He could have won the Presidency, carrying on much of LBJ's domestic policies that were proving successful. Nixon would never have been president, preventing the disillusionment with government resulting from Watergate. The Neoconservative movement would have still been growing, but without Carter being elected on the coattails of Watergate, Reagan wouldn't have had the same sort of ascendancy to the Oval Office.

The true ramifications of the foiling of Sirhan Sirhan's sinister plot will never be known, but Robert Kennedy was the greatest of the Kennedy's and America is a poorer place without his Presidential legacy.

One of the most impressive shows you can possibly see. To watch this guy seamlessly move and loop instrument after instrument to build layer upon layer of sound is breathtaking. It starts off so simply, then the next thing you know you're dancing to music you couldn't hear even out of a full band.

We need to rethink how we live in America. Build communities, not just groups of houses for as far as the eye can see. Many of the problems we constantly talk about in this country have so much to do with the way we live. Health care costs wouldn't rise so much if we walked where we needed to go instead of sat in a car. Personal debt wouldn't be so unmanageable if we weren't spending so much money on houses we don't need on plots of land too big to manage. Education would be more effective if parents could spend the hour they spend commuting home from work actually interacting with their parents. The war on terrorism is being funded by corrupt oil producing nations, that we could cripple but simply cutting our oil consumption. And public spaces would promote actual human interaction.

New Urbanism offers a step towards achieving all of these goals.

Fascinating look at how to run a successful MLB franchise when you don't have the money of the Yankees or Red Sox. Billy Beane's brilliant technique of seeking market inefficiencies to pay for players who are undervalued (in this book, those players with high OBP who don't necessarily have sexy counting stats) while eschewing over valued players (such as big home run hitters who strike out 200 times a year).
