Born in Ruislip Manor, West London, on April 20, 1964, Andy Serkis spent part of his childhood in the Middle East due to his father's medical career. He discovered acting by way of an interest in set design and construction, and launched his career with quirky character roles in television and film. But it was Serkis's mesmerizing portrayal of the computer-animated Gollum in Peter Jackson's Lord of the Rings trilogy that propelled the actor into another realm, earning him universal praise and acclaim. Serkis not only came up with Gollum's voice but also added many of the character's creepy physicalities, resulting in a three-dimensional being with complex emotions.Serkis teamed with Jackson again on King Kong, providing the movements for the larger-than-life gorilla.
He also turned in a haunting performance as a real-life murderer in Longford, collecting BAFTA and Golden Globe nods.

So sad that once again this super talented man was snubbed by the academy. Gollum was one of his most perfect portrayals, but he really outdid himself as Caesar in Rise of the Planet of the Apes. Hopefully they will finally give him some much deserved recognition next year after he reprises his role as Gollum in the Hobbit.
