Christopher Brink No, I don't mean to suggest that an actor's sexuality dictates the range of characters he or she can portray--there wouldn't be much acting involved if it did. As for Takei & his portrayal of Sulu, my understanding of his interpretation of the character is based on the little bit I know about acting theory & some of Takei's statements in the press. Given that the character's sexuality was never explored on-screen (except *maybe* for a little bit of drunken swashbuckling in "The Naked Time"), I expect that Takei, in developing his own interpretation of the roll, gifted the character with his own personal qualities. I admit I'm making a number of tenuous inferences, but I think Takei considers the character to be gay, like J.K. Rowling considers Dumbledoer (sp?) to be gay even though there was never anything explicit about the character's sexuality in print. Granted, in the absence of anything clear in the script, Cho is free to make his own interpretative choices about the character'... -
Christopher Brink As I was saying before I got cut-off: Granted, in the absence of anything clear in the script, Cho is free to make his own interpretative choices about the character's sexuality, I'd just like the producers & writers to acknowledge (what infer to be) the depth of Takei's portrayal of the character over 45 years and put an out gay character on screen. -
Allyson <3s.hoodies-n-skittles Ah I get that. Showing respect to Takei's portrayal by using his interpretation of the character? Gotcha. Somehow, I'm doubting it though. It would probaby be more likely that they'd invent another character that is either not part of the crew or is killed within the first 30-60 minutes. However, it is time that we see a gay character in an action and why not one that claims society has evolved passed racism and bigotry. Cool.
