Just watched a documentary suggesting that the Monolith, at key times in the film, represents a tv/film screen. To possibly allow the viewers to expand their consciousness like the apes, moon party and the Discovery mission... Ligeti's Lux Aterna was played as the Monolith's theme, and also played at the beginning, intermission and end when the screen was entirely black. It also had almost the same dimensions (looks identical upon viewing) as Super 70 Panaflex which it was filmed in. collativelearning.com/2001%20chapter%202.html

Okay, I think I've got it. This film is stunning -- a technical triumph, typical of a Kubrick film. And yeah, it's not likely to ever be forgotten. I liked it. But what threw me was the... emotional sterility of it all. Perhaps that was part of the point, perhaps we were meant to question if HAL was more human than the actual humans. If you were a sentient being capable of feeling and you know that they're going to take away your higher functions, you'd retaliate too. So what does this reveal about humans? And then compare that with the first act of the film.

Perhaps the emotional aspect of the film requires seven minutes of transmission, much like the interview between the media and the crew members of Discovery, and Kubrick's purposely omitted the editing process. Perhaps the effect this film has had on its viewers is meant to mirror the effect the voyage has had on its characters.

              tl;dr 2001: A Space Odyssey is thought-provoking and beautiful.
