Finally got around to watching the blu-ray of the "special edition" / "assembly cut" / "workprint" a few days ago. Ever since I saw that cut on DVD, I've considered it the "real" version and the theatrical version in the "Alien vs Predator" category. It's totally underrated, but beautifully filmed (except for the Alien looking really bad when it's not a guy in a suit), and the perfect closure to the Ripley story. That replay of her recording from the end of Alien always gets me (Manly Tears, of course). Too bad Fincher wants nothing to do with it, because the commentary and features are kind of sparse, and I'd love to hear his take on the Special Edition.

This is a weird movie - but hey, it brought us David Fincher

1st time watching the fincher cut.

Just finished up "Aliens" and I'm gonna watch a bit of this one before I go to sleep. This one is of course directed by David Fincher. My favorite director, beyond a shadow of a doubt. The man is a visionary.

I enjoyed it more this time round, perhaps because it was the Director's Cut, but the awkward stitches of the studio's butchery outdo even the bloodiest scenes in the film itself. Nothing in the storyline, the character motivations or the subtext quite hang together for me. At every turn I want to know something more than the film seems willing or able to reveal - something I don't experience watching the rest of the series, even Resurrection (perhaps because everything is upfront and on the surface). I'm certain that had Fincher been trusted with his vision for the movie, it would have at least felt cohesive, whether or not it turned out to be a masterpiece. I'm only hoping that Prometheus is a return to form for both Ridley Scott and the series itself.

Director's Cut - trying my best to be objective about what I've always considered the weak link in the series.

Watching one every night, this one is amazing though!
