Three years have passed, and BR survivor Shuya Nanahara has since become the leader of a terrorist organization that has declared war on adults. In response to this, the BR act has been amended, new rules created, and a new class of 42 students is abducted and forced into armed conflict with the terrorists. Not as brilliant or original as its predecessor, but at least it makes the effort to distinguish itself as a film rather than just rehashing the first one.

Jeff C. ...and then Takeshi Kitano appears to tie this film more to the first. His performance here is great - melancholy and sadly sweet. Definitely raises my opinion of this flick.

Jeff C. I guess the serious flaw here is that the sequel just doesn't have the tight plot of BR Prime - this one meanders all over the place, with characters changing sides and motivations...it's not complex, it's just so bloated, never letting it be clear where it's trying to go.

Okay, as near as I can tell, the first was a dramatization of the fear and distrust between generations (like America's "Never trust anyone over 30" phase in the '60s - except we got real-life riots, and they got this story), and the sequel takes that set-up and applies it as a Swift-ian argument about the senselessness of war, with a dash of willingness to call Americas' war in Iraq hypocritical (at least as of the film's release in 2003). I think.

Robert Ray Rice I think you completely missed the point of the film. The enemy in both movies is the Japanese government, and moreover Totalitarianism. Other "terrorists", including Middle Eastern terrorists, are shown in favorable lights because terrorism is a matter of perspective. The larger theme here was revolution, freedom from oppression, and taking back control from those who abuse their power. If those aren't American values, I don't know what are.
