An innocent (Kyle MacLachlan) gets mixed up in a small-town murder mystery involving a kinky nightclub chanteuse (Isabella Rossellini) and a kidnapper (Dennis Hopper) with a penchant for snorting helium. One of the most bizarre (and critically acclaimed) movies of the 1980s, Blue Velvet inspired a generation of independent filmmakers with its dark look behind the all-American veneer of small-town life.

Not a movie for the kids. It's dark and gritty and was one of those "dark horse" movies that has a cult following of sorts.

I was pretty young when I saw Blue Velvet. My parents had rented the video, but they told me I was not allowed to watch it. I was home alone and I decided to take a peek... This is one of the few times I vividly remember thinking, "My parents were right!" I was terrified of Dennis Hopper. Even watching this film as an adult, I will never forget seeing it as a child!

When I was 5, I woke up in the middle of the night to see my dad watching Dennis Hopper sucking the fumes out of a gas mask. I went back to sleep scared. Flash forward 15 years, I'm on a David Lynch kick, and to my surprise I see Dennis Hopper. It's him! Haunted, I watched this flick a dozen times since.

Apart from a sales boost for Pabst Blue Ribbon, this film blazed a trail for dark movies and still is one of the best.

David Lynch brings his surreal style to the myth of the American small town with this hauntingly beautiful film. Appearance and reality often collide in the director's work, but it's never looked better than it does here. Kyle MacLachlan is appealingly bland as the college kid who finds an ear in a field (in a gorgeously creepy scene that references Bunuel and Dali), but Dennis Hopper is truly terrifying as Frank Booth, the gas-sucking sadist at the heart of the town's evil. It's more comprehensible than much of Lynch's later work, but it's still one of the strangest journeys committed to film.
