I'm watching City by the Sea, kinda long but lots of good twists in the plot. Just gritty enough to seem real.

How many movies have I seen in which a father has a lost, misguided son? I can't count them all. They don't usually bother me like this one does. Maybe it's down to the chemistry between De Niro and Franco and a testament to how well these two actors perform. It's intensely moving to see Joey -- who just wants to go to Florida (where his family, in happier times, once vacationed) and forget about being a junkie, forget about having been walked out on by his father and no longer supported by his mother -- interact with his cop dad, Vincent. Vincent knows he did the wrong thing, but he can't begin to fix it, doesn't really try anymore. He could blame his own father, but he knows that a person makes his own choices, and Joey is no exception. When Joey gets caught up in murder, what is there to do? The film might not be composed of the most original material, but the acting is what makes it worth seeing.

Very gritty and dark. Most of the characters in the film walk an evil path, and most of the others, even the "good guys" are not far from it.
