I enjoyed this modern version of a film noir. The star, Clive Owen, gives an excellent performance as the Bedales-educated wannabe author who, at his father's suggestion, takes a job as a croupier in a London casino. He is in virtually every scene in the film. He is ably supported by some top notch supporting performances from Gina McKee (who plays his girlfriend) and Alex Kingston (who plays a sexy South African gambler). The film has an authentic feel, particularly in the scenes that depict life in the casino. But there is one problem. This may be my fault rather than the film's but the twist at the end that supposedly explains a major part of the plot raises more questions than it answers. I cannot say more than that without giving too much away. But it left me wondering who had duped whom. That apart, a very good film. 8/10.
