We love our underdogs, and here we had a boat full of them, and so was the sub, a rusty left-over from WW2 head-to-head with a nuclear sub. The appeal of this film has increased since its release in 1995. Why? I think because celebrates American individualism (we all yearn to sail under the jolly roger, else why the popularity of Talk-Like-a-Pirate Day?) and points out the danger of always going by the book.
