That's messed up how they tried to set the camp up like that. I'm glad they were able to thwart those men. This movie is making me think twice about what I complain about. These ppl are fighting to... more

Jim Wallace @danyale_softtone_miller You are getting the right things out of it. Your post gives me goosebumps of hope for this country, more people need this point of view. -
Danyale SoftTone Miller @Gileos , Thank you :) Unfortunately, most people especially those my age, wouldnt take the time to watch anything that doesn't involve sex or women clawing at each other.

Considering the restrictions of the Production Code in 1940, I'm surprised how well this film managed to capture to the spirit of the novel. It's not perfect, but impressive under the circumstances.

teemcee Seems like they more lenient with some adapted works like novels, plays, short stories, etc., as opposed to original screenplays. But even then, some elements were omitted or changed.

Wonder why "touched" meant a bit crazy back then?
-
teemcee "Touched", as in afflicted with insanity. My grandmother always used this word because she thought it sounded more polite than wacko, which was my grandfather's preferred term.

My favorite Steinbeck! One of my greatest pleasures was seeing my daughter in a stage production of this. She played Granny and made her mama cry.

teemcee It kinda makes you think about how small most of our current problems are. We might not enjoy the same standard of living we had a few years ago but I'd imagine we aren't in the desperate straights some Depression-era families faced. Not making light of our current economic hard times but stories like the one you shared make me thankful for simple meals and a warm bed. AND MY FAMILY!!!! -
teemcee *straits, not straights

Been thinking a lot about the "Great Recession" that we're in now, and made me call to mind this movie. At least thing aren't nearly as bad as they were during the Great Depression
