Based loosely on the poem by Rudyard Kipling, Gunga Din takes place in British India during the Thuggee uprising. Three fun loving sergeants are doing fine until one of them wants to get married and leave the service. The other two trick him into a final mission where they end up confronting the entire cult by themselves as the British Army is entering a trap.
Fun to watch, even if I've seen it a bunch of times. One of the best pictures from the best year in Hollywood history. A buddy/adventure/action film. Very well made.
One of the best Cary Grant vehicles - and that's saying a lot. Some have panned it for being racist towards Indians, but I think they way they honored Din at the end more than made up for it. Good... more
One of the best Cary Grant vehicles - and that's saying a lot. Some have panned it for being racist towards Indians, but I think they way they honored Din at the end more than made up for it. Good acting by all involved, and I can see where movies such as Maltese Falcon bit off this classic. In fact, Speilberg and Lucas both said they were inspired by this movie's tale of the Thuggie so much, they included it in Temple of Doom.
