The Illusionist (French: L'Illusionniste) is a 2010 animated film directed by Sylvain Chomet. The film is based on an unproduced script written by French mime, director and actor Jacques Tati in 1956. Controversy surrounds Tati's motivation for the script, which was written in collaboration with his long-term writing partner Henri Marquet, between writing for the films Mon Oncle and Playtime.
Watching this with my babies all curled up on the couch in their jammies... $5 says they're asleep before we're halfway through but so far they're lovin' it :)
Saw this yesterday. Not as engaging as Triplets of Belleville. Still the animation is beautiful and the story poignant. If you like a good cry as I do you'll like this.

An interesting little film, it tells a fluid story of an ageing magician in a world that seems to no longer have time for illusion. Despite the minimal dialogue (and that is mostly in French), this animated feature tells a story that is melancholic, sweet, and quite humorous at times. The animation is all hand drawn (with a few computer generated shots) and the direction of the film is top notch (especially the camera angles chosen in the last montage). The shadows and lighting of the animation set the perfect tone in every scene. This is a must see for those of us who can appreciate animation as something to be respected and absorbed by.

I enjoyed this film for the animation style. It is a great compliment piece to a film like The Artist. I was pleased with the story, but I did get lost. And it wasn't so happy go lucky. The ending is not necessarily a happy one. But still a great film. A must old school animation ethusiasts.
De uma beleza ímpar, animações como essa são uma verdadeira preciosidade em meio à tanto lixo. Assim como As Bicicletas de Belleville, esse longa é mais do que recomendado!
