The Lion in Winter

In this stylish costume drama, England's King Henry II (Peter O'Toole) and his dysfunctional family gather on Christmas Eve to decide who will inherit the throne. Henry fancies youngest son John (Nigel Terry), but his iron-willed spouse (Katharine Hepburn) thinks the crown should go to eldest son Richard the Lionhearted (Anthony Hopkins, in his film debut).

One of my favorite movies of all. I love Hepburn in this, Peter O' Toole and she do nothing but try to get back at each other for years of slights and little tortures. Their sons are just plain damaged, and this, more than any other movie that takes place during this time, shows me what it might really have been like to be suffering from the dual curses of royalty and the scrabble for power. So glad not to be them!
