Excellently cast and acted, amazing effect, beautiful scenery. Fairly true to the books, or at least in keeping with the original feel. Lots of scary war/fight/monster scenes. Great guy candy! The entire trilogy builds very well.

Often enough carrying a great book to the movie screen doesen't work that well. A book gives our imagination place to put them in a way, that we find optimal. Having read the book more then once and going thru other books of J.R.R. Tolkien as well and even ending up reading two of his biographies I had developed a pretty strong picture of how LOTR and the whole Middlearth, whole world of it looks like. Obvieously enough it was not quite what I saw in the movie, but I still loved every minute of it. It's ever so well made and faithfull to the book, even if some content is missing even though we got over 12h of run time.

Oh man, this is such a great film. Great fantasy with great acting and great directing. The characters are believable and it gets the mood down perfect. Not to mention that it can even get a little emotional at times, and brings the audience with it. Awesome film. A great start to a great trilogy.

Great films! The extended editions are definitely superior, about an hour extra for each movie. Altogether the trilogy runs about 12 hours back-to-back-to-back. About once a year I'll do one of those marathons.
