Set in Tokyo, this subtle, nuanced film played Bill Murray against type and earned director Sofia Coppola an Original Screenplay Oscar. Two lost souls -- the young, neglected wife (Scarlett Johansson) of a photographer and a washed-up movie star (Murray, in an Oscar-nominated performance) shooting a TV commercial -- find an odd solace and pensive freedom to be real in each other's company and away from their lives in America.

I usually don't care for Scarlett Johansson's acting but both her and Bill Murray were fantastic and really thought their chemistry on screen was believable.

Its very subtle and you'd think slightly dull but i honestly enjoyed it. the whisper in the end forced me to use google hehe. I liked it

Though it doesn't demand repeat viewing, it is beautifully acted. Bill Murray (and that damned hangdog face of his) will break your heart. And, my unfounded hatred of Scarlett Johanasson isn't too ruffled by her vapid presence.

It'd be tough not to love this movie. I can't imagine any straight guy not crushing hard on Scarlett Johansson or not thinking Bill Murray is the kind of cool they'd want to be now or someday. I'm sure many women found the leads to be similarly attractive, even endearing. Plus it's just a really sweet story with a lot of heart. I know it's sappy, but this movie makes me happy and lets me shed a bit of my cynicism

Yeah, so you don't know what he tells her at the end. Big deal. I really liked this film, it is a very smart dramedy.

Excellent movie. Bill Murray is so funny as a washed up action hero who is trying to make an easy million dollars doing a promo in Japan for a brand of Scotch Whiskey. Everything is so foreign to him except the lonely Scarlett Johansson.

The only Sofia Coppola movie that I can sit through, but it's probably only because I've been to Japan and I like shoegaze.

Murray in one of his best roles and Johansson in one of hers. Coppola didn't have to do much, but the script is pretty strong. Subtle and rhythmic.

Doe eyed innocence versus disaffected weariness. In any other backdrop it'd be tired, but on the stage of Tokyo it's magical.
