Fritz Lang's classic early talkie crime melodrama is set in 1931 Berlin. The police are anxious to capture an elusive child murderer (Peter Lorre), and they begin rounding up every criminal in town. The underworld leaders decide to take the heat off their activities by catching the child killer themselves. Once the killer is fingered, he is marked with the letter "M" chalked on his back. He is tracked down and captured by the combined forces of the Berlin criminal community, who put him on trial for his life in a kangaroo court. The killer pleads for mercy, whining that he can't control his homicidal instincts. The police close in and rescue the killer from the underworld so that he can stand trial again in "respectable" circumstances. Some prints of the film end with a caution to the audience to watch after their children more carefully. What an incredible film given its time

That's an hour and 50 minutes of my life I'm never getting back.

Every time I click on it says Not availible in my country...that's strange

Classic German film about a child murderer. Interesting how they dot talk about pedophiles or even go there, although it's the obvious implication.

Made it halfway through yesterday, neat little movie from 1931 that's way ahead of its time on so many levels.

A child murderer in pre WW2 germany. Truly a masterwork, the killer goes roams the streets and the police unable to even identify the killer feel the pressure of the politicians, the press, and the citizenry. In order to appear to be doing something they begin to round up all criminals. The criminals feeling singled out decide to find the killer themselves, now the cops and criminals are after the murderer.

This is a great children's movie

Very atmospheric...based on the story of the Vampire of Düsseldorf no less!
