A painting is a snapshot of a story being told. The Mill and the Cross examines what is going on inside the famous painting by Bruegel the Elder. I was clueless during much of the movie because it has very little dialogue and it challenged the viewer to know the history of the Spanish Inquisition. But, like a painting, you either "get it" or not.

Great fan of director Lech Majewski (THE GARDEN OF EARTHLY DELIGHTS) and excited to spend some time in Breugel's world.

And what is this I spy? A movie from a book about a painting? I'm curious.

This movie is gorgeous, but not really what I'm in the mood for.

I can't take a Rutger Hauer movie seriously anymore after Hobo With A Shotgun...

I cannot recommend this film ENOUGH. It's a visual feast that pulls you into the plans and sketches of Breughel the Elder's masterpiece "The Way to Calvary," until you are immersed in the painting itself. The painting is a masterpiece and so is this film. *****

Stunningly beautiful film that enters the world of a Breughel painting, The Way of Calvary. The film is filled with small moments of the minutiae of the lives of the people in the painting, which depicts Christ's Passion set in Breughel's own time, 16th-century Flanders.

Watching paint dry is more interesting. Had high hopes, which where dashed.

Leck Majewski's tableau vivant "opening up" of Peter Bruegel's painting "The Way To Calvary" focusses on details -- the codpieces and buttons of 16th century Flemish dress, Belgian peasant mornings, how windmills grind flour, how heretics are crucified, and how painters prepare for art. It is a beautiful movie to watch, if a little mysterious: there are maybe a dozen lines in the 105-minute time, and those lines are somewhat obscure. Still, Breugel's updating of the Passion into contemporary dress is rendered by Majewski with breathtaking skill.

This should be interesting. i've missed Rutger Hauer AND Michael York!

Didn't Rutger used to kick ass? I loved his autobiography, but this is definitely one of his art films. The trailer was enough for me.

Rutger Hauer and Michael York - WOO HOO!! Finally, a movie made just for me. I don't care if anyone else sees it or not. I know I will.
