The Outsiders was famously not a project that Francis Ford Coppola conceived of himself. He decided to make an adaptation of S. E. Hinton’s 1967 novel after he received a letter (or rather a petition) from a group of Californian school children. They expressed their love for the novel and thought of Coppola as the only director of the time who could do it justice. He was so touched by the letter that he correspondingly read and loved the book as well, put together an impressive young ensemble cast, and went on to make a fine adaptation of the coming-of-age drama, set in the mid-sixties.
