By Frederic Auburtin, 2006.
Starring Elijah Wood, Gérard Depardieu, Maggie Gyllenhaal
Paris comes to life in this whimsical patchwork of 18 five-minute shorts united by a common theme -- love in the City of Lights -- and helmed by an international cast of filmmakers, including Gus Van Sant, Olivier Assayas and Alexander Payne. Natalie Portman plays an American actress who captures the heart of a blind student; Juliette Binoche is visited by a ghostly Willem Dafoe; Bob Hoskins solicits a prostitute's advice on pleasing his wife.

If you love romance, Paris, or studying the art form of film, this movie has something you'll love. Each short is so different and unique, exploring the topic of human love with the backdrop of Paris being the only real uniting theme, that it's like being at your birthday party and opening each individual present one at a time, never knowing what treat is in store next. You'll find bits of classic falling-in-love, plus witness love from every other angle, including love of a parent and familial love, commitments and cheating, breaking up and coming together again, casual brushes with attraction and possibilities, and even a few taboos that pull us in like irresistable forces. Some are heartbreakingly sad, some are funny, and a few are just weird or dumb - but I doubt you can sit through this film untouched.
If you've seen it: which short is your fav? (Mine: Natalie Portman's) Which did you least enjoy? (Mine: the hair salon guy.)
