Glenn Craven Good catch! Calista Flockhart is actually credited, along with Alysa Shwedel, as "Barnard Girls." Very different careers for those two; "Quiz Show" is Alysa Shwedel's only acting credit. She was also assistant production coordinator for the film, and credited the same year (1994) as a production assistant for "It Could Happen to You," the Nicolas Cage film about a cop who wins the lottery and splits it with the waitress he couldn't afford to tip at the diner a day earlier.

I don't know how I feel about this movie exactly. It certainly isn't a bad film, but I can't say that I understand why the academy award nominations in 1994. The movie is a little convoluted in the sense that it doesn't really know what to present to the audience. Are we to feel bad for Van Doren and family? Is this an indictment of television or an exposure of it? Stumpel was portrayed well, but was he that neurotic in real life? All these sentiments are jumbled up into 2 hours+ and it left me on the fence between entertainment and lack of focus.
              • Glenn Craven
Glenn Craven I just watched this film today for the first time and thought it was brilliant. I think you're SUPPOSED to feel conflicted; that's the point. Charles Van Doren certainly was. ... Robert Redford took a few liberties with historical accuracy for dramatic effect, but in hindsight (having now studied the scandal a bit) not a lot of liberties. With Dick Goodwin (the Congressional investigator) as co-producer, probably not a lot. ... Amazing to me is that all three men at the heart of the history in this film are still alive; Charles Van Doren is 86, Herb Stempel is 85 and Dick Goodwin (who was a speechwriter for RFK among others, and the husband of Doris Kearns Goodwin) is 80.

Angel You make an excellent point. Seeing it in those terms, it all makes sense. In the end, it had me thinking but I guess I lacked the proper focus to appreciate the film. Good call, man.
