Admittedly I wasnt certain what to expect from the original, especially being made almost 40 years ago, but I have to say it was an unexpected surprise and though the times unmistakably reveal themselves, the storyline is still strong and holds up spectacularly well. A smart film that in its grandeur has criminals taking over a NY subway train, holding more than a dozen hostages, and demanding a ransom of a millions dollars from the city, that aside from a few misc locations is primarily shot within the train and the transit authority headquarters. But the real highlight was the performances that unsuspectingly made the scenario much more realistic with quick paced, witty, and at times humorous dialogue that all around made the film quite a different experience than the remake and in many ways much better.

This was already the greatest movie ever made. Whoever decided it needed a remake was sorely mistaken. #DumbAss

I probably owe it to myself to see the original before the remake. The fact that it's on netflix helps.

Yes it is a kind of suspense movie, but also a real commentary on 1970's New York. A kind of anti dramatic action movie. So surprised that it would be remade in today's hyperkinetic movie age

Not the 21st century abomination but the 1970's version. Filmed in New York City, before it became a tourist trap...

If you have only seen the remake, I judge you. Robert Shaw > John Travolta.
