Is disliking the lead character good or bad in a film?

Dovebyrd It's good, though I understand your question; as I initially disliked *Matt* as a person after he played Charlie in "School Ties" 20 or so years ago. I mixed his fantastic acting in the role with the real person. LOL The difference became clear to me when i loved him everything that came after.
Matt Damon is such a remarkable actor and is sooo good in this role, you can see the evolution of Tom's psyche ... I dislike his character here though not nearly as much as much as I absolutely despise his character in "School Ties." Yet it's a mark of Matt's gifted abilities, since I loved him in "Titan A.E" & "The Legend of Bagger Vance" both of which came after this one.
You *want* to like Tom, to have compassion for him, but you can't because of everything he's doing.... and even though you understand why, he isn't likable by the end.

The story of social climber turned into a psychopath. A good movie!

Dovebyrd Actually, ironically, he wasn't initially a social climber either. It was really forced upon him by his inability to say no. Yet once there, his own damaged psyche took over and shifted his life in all ways.
It really is a great movie and though most don't, I love the ending!

Talented Mr. Ripley - This is one of most modern Polansky films that isn't Polanksy I can think of.
