    I actually rank this album above "OK Computer," although that one's also terrific. "The Bends" is less experimental, i.e., pretentious than Radiohead's later stuff. It might just be the last straight-ahead rock album the group ever did, and sure it sounds like they were working every last bit of those impulses out. You can argue they've never been as aggressive as during the chorus of the titular track or on "Idiot Bums," or during the bridge of "My Iron Lung." "Fake Plastic Trees" also builds momentum nicely, although personally, I think the underrated gem is "Black Star," with its undertone of mysterious sadness.

    This is one of Radiohead's best albums. I love High and Dry. What a great song. The whole album is just full of terrific songs.

    saw them play this album live before it came out at oxford Apollo amazing gig, with a young supergrass supporting. the album was recorded in the town I grew up in; Chipping Norton in oxfordshire.

And for good reason. The quintet honed its talent for bombastic Brit Rock, yet still preserved an edge of unpredictability. Even singles like the title track didn't give in to the kind of swooning guitar clichés usually embraced by commercial radio. If the CD proved anything, it was that Radiohead could find solid ground between pop experimentation and the tradition of born-in-the-bone, balls-out rock. --Nick Heil
