The Hold Steady’s Boys and Girls In America borrows heavily from Jack Kerouac’s On The Road not only for its title but also for the characters’ struggles with the fact that “boy and girls in America have such a sad time together.” Craig Finn sings about girls who wring boys dry of all their money, drugs, and fun in order to forget the sad state of their lives in-between each high, boys who try to reach for something transcendent with the help of a tab of ecstasy, a girl, and a concert in field in Massachusetts, and massive nights of beer, sex, laughter, drugs, and rock and roll. Just as Kerouac ricocheted across the nation in his quest to find the eternal slowdown when time stops, crystalizes, and every jagged edge of life is finally aligned into a perfect, infinite moment, every character in Boys and Girls in America is searching for the shards of infinity found in the notes of a guitar, the folds of a mushroom, or the shuddering peaks of a climax.

On this, The Hold Steady's third release, the band taps Springsteen, Kerouac (the title is nicked from 'On the Road'), and doomed poet John Berryman, all to unleash a widescreen pean to suburban midwestern youth. It works brilliantly, creating something at times epic and, at others, intimate, giving the boys and girls in America a soundtrack for their killer parties- and a warm jacket and cup of coffee in the bleary mornings that follow.
